Aaron and his descendants were set apart forever “to consecrate the most holy things”. Moses is named to record that “his sons were named among the tribe of Levi”, so the lawgiver's line is counted with the common Levites. Chronicles states the contrast without comment, the same restraint Numbers keeps.

Shebuel was the first
Shebuel heads the line of Gershom, son of Moses. John Gill notes that 1 Chronicles 24:20 calls him Shubael and that the Targum makes him the Jonathan of Judges 18:30. Adam Clarke cites a Targum tradition that this Jonathan repented in old age and that David made him chief treasurer.
