David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi--These are enumerated according to their fathers' houses, but no more of these are mentioned here than the twenty-four thousand who were engaged in the work connected with the Lord's house.

on 1 Chronicles 23:6-11
The thirty eight thousand are sorted into divisions by the three Levitical houses, “Gershom, Kohath, and Merari”. Jeush and Beriah “did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family”. The register fixes every family's place ahead of the working divisions of chapters 24 to 27.
