Six Levitical houses are mustered by name and number, 862 men in all, under Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab. Kohath's line supplies four of the six heads, since the ark was a Kohathite charge under Numbers 4, while Gershom and Merari each supply one.

from the Elizaphanites, Shemaiah the
Elizaphan son of Uzziel was chief of the Kohathite clans in the wilderness (Numbers 3:30). He and Mishael carried the bodies of Nadab and Abihu out of the camp in Leviticus 10:4. His descendants had grown into a house of their own.
