Six Levitical houses are mustered by name and number, 862 men in all, under Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab. Kohath's line supplies four of the six heads, since the ark was a Kohathite charge under Numbers 4, while Gershom and Merari each supply one.

The Merarites had carried the frames, bars and bases of the tabernacle (Numbers 4:29 to 33). Asaiah the chief appears in the line of Merari at 1 Chronicles 6:30. His 220 relatives are the largest of the six Levite companies.
