Six Levitical houses are mustered by name and number, 862 men in all, under Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab. Kohath's line supplies four of the six heads, since the ark was a Kohathite charge under Numbers 4, while Gershom and Merari each supply one.

Hebron here is a son of Kohath (Exodus 6:18), and the Hebronites are his descendants. Four of the six houses in verses 5 to 10 descend from Kohath. The ark's wilderness bearers lead its return.
