Nehemiah 6:1-2

Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem the Arabian hear that the wall stands with no breach left in it, though the doors are not yet hung on the gates. The work is finished in substance before it is finished in every detail, and the enemies switch from open opposition to a friendly-sounding invitation. Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono reads as neighborly, but the narrator states the aim plainly: they thought to do me mischief. Gill and Clarke both read the summons as a plan to draw Nehemiah away from Jerusalem and his own people before striking him.

Nehemiah 6:3-4

I am doing a great work: Nehemiah answers with the line the whole chapter turns on: I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. The clause why should the work cease, whilst I leave it stands as reason enough on its own, with no accusation made and no plot named aloud. Henry reads this as a true reason given without exposing that Nehemiah already sees through the design, refusing his enemies the satisfaction of a quarrel. The invitation comes four times and is refused four times in the same words, patience wearing down persistence rather than the other way round.

Nehemiah 6:5-7

The fifth approach drops the pretense of friendliness. Sanballat sends an open letter, unsealed so any hand could read it, carrying a charge meant to spread before Nehemiah could answer it: it is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel. The letter claims Nehemiah has hired prophets to proclaim him king in Judah and dares him to come explain himself, the same trap set at Ono with a sharper edge. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown and Gill both note that the open letter was itself an insult, a form used for inferiors rather than equals, its missing seal the first accusation before a word is read.

Nehemiah 6:8-9

Nehemiah answers the charge in one flat sentence: there are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart. He names the tactic without flattering it, a fabrication built to weaken the builders' hands and stop the work before an enemy needed to lift a weapon. Then the memoir does what it always does under pressure and turns report into prayer: now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. Wesley calls this the right prayer for entering any conflict, and Henry reads the whole exchange as proof that a plain answer, given once, does more against fear than argument does.

Nehemiah 6:10-12

Nehemiah visits Shemaiah, a man shut up in his own house who claims fear of assassination and urges a plan that sounds like safety: let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors. The advice is a trap, since only a priest could lawfully enter that part of the temple and Nehemiah was not one. His answer is the chapter's sharpest line: should such a man as I flee, and who is there, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life. Then comes the discernment that closes the scene: I perceived that God had not sent him, for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him, a plain man reading a false prophecy by the counsel it served rather than by any sign.

Nehemiah 6:13-14

The reason for the plot is stated outright: Shemaiah was hired so that Nehemiah should be afraid, and do so, and sin, giving his enemies matter for an evil report to reproach him with. Fear was meant to produce a real trespass, not a rumor, since a governor caught inside the forbidden precinct would have handed his accusers a true charge instead of a false one. Nehemiah answers with a short prayer rather than a defense: my God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets that would have put me in fear. Gill records a tradition identifying Noadiah with Shemaiah's own household, though the text itself only names her as one more hired voice against the wall.

Nehemiah 6:15

So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days, a single sentence closing five chapters of siege and slander. Elul falls in late summer, the sixth month of the Hebrew calendar, so the whole campaign from Nehemiah's first night ride around the ruins to the last stone set runs inside one working season. Henry credits the enemies' own threats with quickening the pace, since fear of attack pressed the builders to finish before danger could arrive. Keil sets the fifty two days against Josephus's much longer figure and finds Nehemiah's own count, tied to a named month and a named king's reign, the more reliable record.

Nehemiah 6:16

The enemies hear of it and are much cast down in their own eyes, for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. The verdict carries weight because of who speaks it: men who spent five chapters trying to stop the wall now read its speed and its survival as evidence no human effort alone explains. Clarke calls the confession remarkable precisely because it comes from hostile witnesses rather than a friendly one. This is the hand of our God formula answered in brick and mortar, the same claim Ezra kept making about caravans and grants now standing where the watching nations can see it.

Nehemiah 6:17-19

The wall stands finished, but the chapter will not let the story end there: in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them, a correspondence running the whole time the wall was rising. Tobiah had married into Judah's own leadership, son in law to Shechaniah and father in law to a son married to Meshullam's daughter, so the enemy held a family claim inside Jerusalem as well as a political one. Those same nobles kept reporting Tobiah's good deeds to Nehemiah and repeating Nehemiah's own words back to him, and Tobiah answered by sending letters meant to put him in fear even after the building was done. Clarke reads the passage as proof that Nehemiah's harder fight was never the siege outside the wall but the compromised friendships inside it, and Gill notes the same pattern of intermarriage Ezra had to unwind returning here among the very nobility that should have guarded against it.
