Matthew 3:1-3

preaching in the wilderness of Judea: John's ministry opens in those days, some three decades after chapter 2 with no exact date given, and his location itself preaches, since Israel's story keeps beginning in a wilderness, from the exodus onward. His message reduces to two words, repent, metanoia in the Greek, a change of mind and direction rather than mere regret, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, the first sounding of Matthew's own distinctive phrase against Mark and Luke's kingdom of God. Verse 3 supplies the chapter's first Old Testament citation, Isaiah 40:3's herald crying in the wilderness, read across the church as pointing directly to this man preparing the way of the Lord.

Matthew 3:4

John's raiment of camel's hair and leathern girdle deliberately echoes 2 Kings 1:8's description of Elijah, and the bench reads the wardrobe as Matthew's quiet claim that this is the promised Elijah of Malachi 4:5-6, which Jesus himself will state plainly at 11:14 and 17:12-13. Locusts and wild honey were both foods permitted under the law in Leviticus 11:22, the diet of a man who owns nothing and depends on what the wilderness itself provides. The prophet's whole appearance argues before he ever speaks a word.

Matthew 3:5-6

Jerusalem and all Judea empty toward the wilderness, a response the bench calls unprecedented since the earlier prophets, confessing their sins as they are baptized in the Jordan. John's baptism is not the ceremonial washing already familiar from proselyte baptism for Gentile converts or from the Qumran community nearby; it is Israelites themselves publicly confessing need, entering the same river Joshua once crossed to enter the land. The scale of the response measures how deeply the nation felt a prophet's silence had fallen since Malachi.

Matthew 3:7-10

Generation of vipers is John's own name for two parties usually opposed to each other, Pharisees and Sadducees, united here only by a common presumption on descent, we have Abraham to our father. John answers that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham, a claim the bench reads as already opening the door Jesus will walk through with Gentile faith later in the book, since sonship runs on fruit rather than blood. The axe already laid unto the root and the fire already ready name a judgment poised rather than merely threatened, and bring forth fruits meet for repentance demands a changed life, not water alone.

Matthew 3:11-12

John sets his own water baptism beside a greater baptism to come, with the Holy Ghost and with fire, and confesses himself unworthy even to carry the sandals of the one who brings it, the lowest task a slave performed in that culture. The fan and the purged floor picture a harvest already separated, wheat gathered into the garner and chaff burned with a fire nothing can quench. The bench reads the fire in both halves together, the Spirit's fire that purifies at Pentecost and the fire of final judgment, since John's own hearers stood before both possibilities depending on their fruit.

Matthew 3:13-15

Jesus travels the length of the land, from Galilee to Jordan, to receive a baptism meant for repentant sinners, and John's own protest, I have need to be baptized of thee, states the plain problem, the sinless submitting to a sign of sin confessed. Jesus answers with the chapter's key phrase, fulfil all righteousness, the first of six beats of the righteousness thread that runs through the Sermon at 5:6, 5:10 and 5:20 to John's own way of righteousness at 21:32. The bench reads the fulfilling as identification, the Messiah numbering himself with the people he came to save before he ever preaches to them, not any need of his own.

Matthew 3:16-17

the Spirit of God descending like a dove: All three persons of the Godhead appear together in one scene, the Son baptized in the water, the Spirit descending like a dove and lighting on him, and the Father's voice from heaven naming him. This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, draws together Psalm 2:7's royal decree and Isaiah 42:1's chosen servant, the king and the suffering servant identified as one person at the very start of his ministry. The dove's bodily descent, which Luke also records, marks a moment the church has long read as the clearest trinitarian scene in the Gospels.
