Mark7chapter 7

Mark 7:1-2

A delegation from Jerusalem, not the local Galilean sort, travels specifically to observe Jesus, and their complaint centers on ceremonial hand washing before the disciples' meal, an issue the law itself nowhere commands for ordinary eating. Mark, writing partly for a Gentile readership unfamiliar with such customs, will pause to explain the tradition in the next two verses before returning to the confrontation. The bench reads the delegation's presence as evidence that Jesus' growing reputation had already reached the religious establishment in the capital itself.

Mark 7:3-4

Mark's explanatory aside describes a whole system of ceremonial washing, hands before eating, purification after the marketplace, and the washing of cups, pots, brasen vessels and tables, none of it commanded in the law of Moses but developed as the tradition of the elders, an oral body of interpretation the Pharisees treated as binding as Scripture itself. Mark 7:5

The Pharisees and scribes finally state their objection directly to Jesus rather than merely observing, framing the disciples' unwashed hands as a violation not of the law of God but of the tradition of the elders, a distinction their own question makes for them. The bench reads the question as an attempt to force Jesus to either defend a breach of tradition or concede the tradition's binding authority, and his answer will instead expose what the question itself assumed.

Mark 7:6-7

Jesus answers Scripture with Scripture, quoting Isaiah's charge against a people who honor God with their lips while their heart stays far from him, and applies it directly, of you hypocrites, to the men standing before him. In vain do they worship me names their whole system's failure, not merely a wrong practice but worship that fails to reach God at all because human commandments have been taught as though they were his own. Mark 7:8-9

Mark 7:10-11

Jesus grounds the whole case study in the fifth commandment and its accompanying penalty for cursing a parent, then sets against it the Corban device, an Aramaic word meaning a gift or offering dedicated to God, by which a man could declare property off limits to his parents' use while, in practice, keeping the benefit for himself. The bench treats Corban as keep-hard philology, since later rabbinic legal tradition confirms exactly this kind of vow could bind even against a parent's need, and Jesus names it as a technicality used to dodge a direct command of God. The scandal is not vow-making itself but a system that let a religious formula override filial duty entirely.

Mark 7:12-13

Ye suffer him no more to do ought states the practical result bluntly, a son legally barred from helping the parents the commandment obligates him to honor, and Jesus names the mechanism for what it is, making the word of God of none effect through your tradition. Mark 7:14-16

Mark 7:17-19

Once indoors and away from the crowd, the disciples ask for the meaning of a saying Jesus expected them to have grasped already, are ye so without understanding also, his question implying the teaching should not have needed private explanation at all. Food entering the belly and passing out through the ordinary process cannot reach the heart, and Mark adds his own editorial comment, purging all meats, a phrase the commentators read as Mark's inspired interpretation that Jesus here declares every food clean. The bench notes this reading anticipates and undergirds the church's later settlement of the food question in Acts and the epistles.

Mark 7:20-23

Jesus relocates true defilement entirely to the heart, and the list he gives is deliberately wide rather than merely illustrative, evil thoughts named first as the root from which the named sins of act, adultery, fornication, murder, theft, and the sins of disposition, covetousness, deceit, an evil eye, pride, foolishness, all proceed. Mark 7:24

Mark 7:25-26

The woman comes seeking help for her daughter's affliction and falls at Jesus' feet, and Mark identifies her deliberately with a double designation, a Greek by religion and culture, a Syrophenician by nationality, marking her as doubly outside the covenant people by both categories a Jewish reader would recognize. The bench reads Mark's careful identification as setting up the exchange that follows, since her distance from Israel is precisely what makes the conversation, and its outcome, remarkable.

Mark 7:27

Let the children first be filled states a priority, first, rather than an exclusion, and the commentators read the saying as testing rather than rejecting her faith, since a hard word answered patiently often draws out a greater faith than an easy grant would have. Casting it unto the dogs uses a diminutive form in the Greek for household pets rather than the harsher term for scavenging street dogs, softening a saying that still, on its surface, places Gentiles after Israel in the order of the Lord's earthly ministry. The bench declines to read the saying as contempt, given how Jesus immediately grants the request her answer draws out.

Mark 7:28

the dogs under the table eat: Her answer accepts the term Jesus used and turns it into an argument, Yes, Lord, yet even household dogs eat the crumbs the children drop, asking for nothing more than an overflow from Israel's own table rather than any place set at it. The bench reads her reply as a model of humble persistence, faith that argues from the Lord's own words rather than against them, taking the very metaphor meant to test her and using it to press her case further.

Mark 7:29-30

Jesus grants the healing on the ground of her saying itself, a reward for the faith her answer displayed rather than for any status she held by birth, and the deliverance is instant and remote, accomplished without his presence at her house at all. She returns to find her daughter already at rest on the bed, the devil gone, and the bench reads the scene as the clearest Gentile parallel in this Gospel to faith honored at a distance in the other Gospels.

Mark 7:31

The route Mark records is a wide detour, from Tyre north and east before turning south again through Decapolis to reach the sea of Galilee, geography the commentators read as consistent with an author who actually knew the region rather than inventing a straight line between two points. This same Decapolis region had already heard the testimony of the healed Gadarene demoniac from an earlier chapter, so Jesus arrives to a population his own former patient had already prepared.

Mark 7:32

The man is brought by others rather than coming himself, his double disability, deafness and a speech impediment, leaving him dependent on friends to intercede, and their request is specific, that Jesus would put his hand upon him. The bench reads the man's passivity in the account as typical of how deafness isolates a person from initiating help on his own behalf, making the friends' intervention itself an act of compassion worth noting.

Mark 7:33-34

Jesus takes the man aside from the crowd, a private setting the bench reads as sparing him public spectacle over his affliction, and uses touch the man himself can feel and understand though he cannot hear a word spoken, fingers in the ears, spittle, a touch to the tongue, gestures a deaf man could follow with his eyes. Looking up to heaven identifies the true source of the coming healing before it happens, and Ephphatha, the Aramaic word Mark keeps and translates, be opened, is Peter's own remembered syllable, the same commitment to eyewitness sound that preserves Talitha cumi and Boanerges elsewhere in this Gospel.

Mark 7:35

The healing is described in full mechanical detail, the ears opened and the bond of the tongue loosed, language the commentators read as a physical impediment actually severed rather than a merely functional restoration, and he spake plain notes the healing's completeness, no halting speech left over from years of disuse. The bench reads Mark's precision here as consistent with his habit throughout the Gospel of giving physical detail an eyewitness would notice and remember.

Mark 7:36-37

The command to silence meets the same fate every other silencing command has met in this Gospel, the more he charged them, the more they published it, human gratitude overflowing the messianic secret's careful boundaries once again. The crowd's verdict, he hath done all things well, deliberately echoes the creation account's own refrain of God pronouncing his work good, and the specific pairing named, the deaf hearing and the dumb speaking, answers the prophetic hope for the days of the kingdom's arrival. The bench reads the astonishment as beyond measure precisely because the healing fulfilled expectations the crowd already carried from their own Scriptures.
