Mark 2:1-2

Jesus returns to the house that has become his working base in Capernaum, and the crowd gathers so fast and so thick that Mark says there was no room to receive them, not even about the door. He preached the word unto them states plainly what draws the crowd first, the teaching itself, before any healing enters the scene that follows. The bench reads the packed house as the setting the roof-breakers will shortly have to solve from above, since the ground floor offers no way in.

Mark 2:3-5

Four men carry a paralyzed friend and, finding no way through the crowd, dig through the roof itself and lower the bed at Jesus's feet, a labor Mark records as the faith he responds to, when Jesus saw their faith. The friends' faith, not the paralytic's own stated faith, is what the text credits, and the bench notes this as real ground for intercessory confidence, one person's persistence opening a door for another's healing. Jesus answers with words nobody asked for, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee, addressing the deeper need before the visible one, and the address Son is tender, not distant.

Mark 2:6-7

The scribes' objection is theologically correct as far as it goes, who can forgive sins but God only, and the bench takes their logic seriously rather than dismissing it, since the claim Jesus has just made truly does belong to God alone in the Hebrew scriptures they knew. Their charge, blasphemy, is the same charge that will convict him at his trial in 14:64, so this early scene already previews the crime he will die for. The scribes reason silently, in their hearts, yet Jesus answers a question no one spoke aloud, which is itself the first evidence his claim was true.

Mark 2:8-10

Jesus reads unspoken thought, itself a claim only God can rightly make, and then poses the harder question back to the scribes, which is easier to say, forgiven or arise and walk, since the first cannot be checked and the second can be disproven in front of everyone at once. The healing is offered as visible proof of the invisible claim, that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, the title Son of man used here for the first time in the book and carrying full authority rather than mere humility. The bench reads the logic as airtight, a miracle performed to authenticate a claim no one could otherwise verify.

Mark 2:11-12

The command is threefold and immediate, arise, take up thy bed, go thy way, and Mark reports all three obeyed at once, before them all, no delay and no partial recovery to argue about. We never saw it on this fashion is the crowd's own verdict, astonishment matching the amazement thread already running through the first chapter. The bench reads the public healing as Jesus's chosen answer to a private accusation, forgiveness proven exactly where the scribes could watch it happen.

Mark 2:13-14

Jesus returns to the sea and teaches the crowd again, and in the middle of that ordinary day he sees Levi the son of Alpheus sitting at the tax office and calls him with the same two words given to the fishermen, follow me. Levi is a customs collector for Rome, a trade Jewish society regarded as collaboration with the occupier and routine dishonesty, and yet Jesus calls him exactly as he called Simon and Andrew, no different weight given to the respectable trade or the despised one. He arose and followed him is immediate, matching straightway of chapter 1, and the bench reads Levi's abandoned booth as costing him a livelihood he could not simply resume, unlike a fisherman's nets.

Mark 2:15-17

Levi's own house becomes the site of a dinner Mark says drew many publicans and sinners, the class Levi already belonged to and evidently brought with him, and the scribes and Pharisees object not to Jesus directly but to his disciples, how is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners. Table fellowship in that culture implied approval and shared standing, so the objection is not petty but carries real theological weight, which Jesus answers with a physician's logic rather than a denial. They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick states his own mission in one line, I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance, and the bench reads this as among the clearest self-statements of purpose Jesus gives in the Gospel.

Mark 2:18-20

Fasting was the visible mark of a certain kind of piety, and the question assumes Jesus's disciples fall short of it, but Jesus answers with a wedding image instead of a rule, can the children of the bridechamber fast while the bridegroom is with them. He names himself the bridegroom, a claim with messianic overtones drawn from Isaiah and Hosea's marriage language for God and Israel, and he predicts his own removal plainly, the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away, an early note of the cross long before Peter's confession at 8:29. The bench reads the saying as timing rather than abolition, fasting proper to absence and grief, not owed while the bridegroom himself is present at the table.

Mark 2:21-22

Two household pictures, an unshrunk patch tearing an old coat and new wine bursting old skins, both make the same point from different angles, that what Jesus brings cannot simply be stitched onto the old system without destroying both. The old bottles are not despised as worthless, only as unsuited to a content still fermenting and expanding, and new wine must be put into new bottles states the positive half of the saying, a fresh form fitted to a genuinely new thing. The bench reads both images as continuing the bridegroom saying just given, fasting rules borrowed wholesale from an old order cannot simply be draped over the new one Jesus is bringing.

Mark 2:23-24

Plucking grain by hand while walking through a field was permitted under the law itself, Deuteronomy 23:25 allows a traveler to eat from a neighbor's standing grain, so the disciples break no scriptural command, only a rabbinic fence built around the sabbath that classed the plucking as a form of reaping. The Pharisees' question, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful, reveals the gap between the law as given and the law as fenced by generations of additional rulings. The bench reads the scene as the first of two sabbath controversies bracketing this chapter's end and the next chapter's opening, both testing whether Jesus will submit to the fence or to the law itself.

Mark 2:25-26

Jesus answers scripture with scripture, pointing to 1 Samuel 21 where David, fleeing Saul and genuinely hungry, ate the shewbread reserved for priests alone and gave it to his men, a precedent the Pharisees themselves accepted as legitimate. The naming of Abiathar as high priest is a well-known difficulty, since 1 Samuel 21 names Ahimelech, Abiathar's father, in office at that moment, and the bench sets out the readings offered honestly, that Abiathar was present and later became the more famous high priest whose name attached to the event, or that the phrase means in the days of, a section heading rather than a claim about who held the office that hour. The argument itself stands regardless of the name, need overriding a ceremonial restriction when the restriction was never meant to starve the hungry.

Mark 2:27-28

The sabbath was made for man: The sabbath was made for man reverses the fence-builders' logic entirely, the day existing to serve human need and rest rather than human beings existing to serve an ever-multiplying set of restrictions. Verse 28 then claims something larger than a principle about sabbath-keeping, the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath, a direct claim to authority over an institution instituted at creation itself, Genesis 2:2-3, and therefore a claim of authority equal to the one who made it. The bench reads the chapter's two sabbath scenes, forgiveness proven by healing and now lordship proven by teaching, as building toward the same conclusion Peter will finally speak aloud in chapter 8.
