Mark13chapter 13

Mark 13:1-2

See what manner of stones and what buildings are here marvels at Herod's temple, some of its stones running forty feet and more, a structure that looked as permanent as the mountain it sat on. There shall not be left one stone upon another answers that admiration with total destruction, a word fulfilled with unusual literalness when Roman soldiers razed the temple in AD 70, a fall Josephus records from the losing side. The prediction sets the occasion for everything the disciples ask next.

Mark 13:3-4

Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, the inner circle plus Andrew, seated with him over against the temple on the mount whose slopes gave the whole city into view. Their question comes in two parts, when shall these things be, and what shall be the sign, and Matthew's parallel adds a third clause naming the end of the world, showing the disciples themselves folded a near horizon and a far one into one question. The discourse that follows answers both without ever fully separating them for the reader.

Mark 13:5-6

Take heed lest any man deceive you opens the discourse before a single sign is given, a warning placed first because deception, not ignorance, is the greater danger to the disciples Jesus is addressing. Many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ names a pattern already active in first century Judea, where Josephus records several such claimants stirring unrest, and the warning has applied across every century since. The Lord answers a question about timing by first securing his hearers against being misled.

Mark 13:7-8

Wars and rumours of wars are named and immediately defused, be ye not troubled, for such things must needs be, but the end shall not be yet, a correction against reading every calamity as the final sign. Nation against nation, earthquakes, and famines are called the beginnings of sorrows, the Greek word for birth pains, an image of process rather than arrival, pains that increase and multiply on the way to a delivery still ahead. The bench reads this as Jesus lowering the temperature on premature alarm while still telling his disciples plainly what lies on the road.

Mark 13:9-11

They shall deliver you up to councils, beaten in synagogues and brought before rulers and kings, a prediction Acts records fulfilled in the apostles' own arrests and in Paul's hearings before Felix, Festus, and Agrippa. For my sake, for a testimony against them turns persecution itself into an occasion of witness, and the gospel must first be published among all nations sets a mission that outruns the disciples' own generation. Take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak promises the Spirit's help in the hour of trial specifically, a promise the bench is careful to distinguish from an excuse for unprepared teaching in ordinary settings.

Mark 13:12-13

The brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son describes persecution reaching into households, the natural bonds of family broken by allegiance to Christ. Ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake states the cost plainly, and he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved closes the section with a promise whose sense the commentators weigh carefully, some reading saved as temporal deliverance from the coming catastrophe and others as final salvation, both readings honoring the verse's own call to endurance.

Mark 13:14

the abomination of desolation: The abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not is the discourse's hardest sign, and let him that readeth understand marks it as a phrase demanding careful attention. Three readings stand in the church's history: Antiochus Epiphanes's altar to Zeus set up in the temple in 167 BC, a fulfillment Daniel's own prophecy already envisioned in its near term; the Roman armies surrounding and then entering the temple in AD 70, which Luke's parallel names directly as Jerusalem compassed with armies; and a future desecration by a coming man of sin, per Paul's language in 2 Thessalonians 2 and John's in Revelation 13. The positions are named with their holders and no verdict is stamped on which horizon, or how many, this verse reaches.

Mark 13:15-18

Let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein describes flight so urgent there is no time to gather possessions, and the man in the field is told not even to turn back for his garment. Woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck names the hardship flight brings hardest on the most vulnerable, and pray ye that your flight be not in the winter adds the practical concern of swollen rivers and impassable roads. Eusebius records an early church tradition that Jerusalem's Christians did flee to Pella before the city fell in AD 70, a literal obedience to exactly this warning.

Mark 13:19-20

Affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be, is language the commentators read two ways: as the ancient idiom of unequaled severity applied to the horror of Jerusalem's fall, an event Josephus's own account of the siege makes almost unbearable to read, or as pointing past AD 70 to a still future tribulation exceeding even that catastrophe. Except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days grounds the limit of the trial in God's own mercy toward those he has chosen, whichever horizon is in view.

Mark 13:21-23

Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not repeats the discourse's opening warning now with sharper cause, for false Christs and false prophets shall rise and shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. The bench draws the sober lesson that miracles alone never certify a messenger, since counterfeit signs are named here as a real danger rather than a contradiction in terms. Behold, I have foretold you all things gives the disciples a standing test, every future claim measured against what Christ has already said.

Mark 13:24-25

The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars of heaven shall fall draws its language straight from the prophets' day of the Lord imagery, Isaiah 13:10 and Joel 2:10 among others, language those same prophets had already used for historical judgments on Babylon and other nations. The commentators divide over whether Mark intends a literal cosmic disruption at a still future end or apocalyptic language describing the historical judgment on Jerusalem in the vivid idiom the Old Testament itself established, and both positions are named without a verdict stamped on the reading.

Mark 13:26-27

the Son of man coming in the clouds: Then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory draws directly on Daniel 7:13-14, the vision of one like the Son of man given dominion before the Ancient of days. He shall send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds is read by futurists as the visible bodily second coming still ahead, and by some preterist readers as a coming in judgment, the same cloud language the Old Testament prophets used for God's historical visitations against Egypt and other nations; the positions stand named, and the verse itself is left to speak at full strength in either reading.

Mark 13:28-29

Learn a parable of the fig tree turns the sign section into a lesson in reading, tender branches and new leaves announcing summer before it arrives, an ordinary observation everyone in the audience would recognize at once. So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors applies the same logic to the signs just given, though the commentators differ on whether it is names the destruction of Jerusalem, the Son of man's coming, or both together. The urgency of the image, nigh, even at the doors, is the point the parable presses hardest.

Mark 13:30-31

Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done is the discourse's hardest crux, and the readings divide sharply with holders on each side. Preterist readers take generation in its ordinary sense, the generation then living, and find it satisfied within forty years by the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70; other readers take the Greek genea as capable of meaning race, so that the Jewish people will not cease to exist before all these things are fulfilled, and futurist readers apply it to the generation alive when the cosmic signs just described begin to appear. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away follows immediately, Christ's own authority claimed as more permanent than creation itself, whichever reading of generation is held.

Mark 13:32-33

Of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father is among the most debated Christological verses in the Gospels, and the historic church has read it as the Son's voluntary limitation of knowledge in his incarnate human experience, not a denial of his eternal deity; Arian teachers later pressed the verse to argue against Christ's full deity, and the church answered by holding both his true humanity and his true deity together rather than letting one verse decide against the whole of Scripture's witness. Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is turns the very uncertainty of the timing into the ground for watchfulness rather than for calculation, an instruction the bench reads as ruling out date setting on the Lord's own authority.

Mark 13:34-37

The Son of man is likened to a man gone abroad to a distant country, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch, closing the discourse with a household parable, each servant given a task and the doorkeeper given one charge above the rest. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh sets readiness rather than reckoning as the right response to an unknown hour, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning covering every watch of the night without favoring one. What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch widens the address from the four disciples on the mountain to the whole church across every generation the words will reach, and the discourse ends on that single word.
