Luke 14:1-2

Jesus goes into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, and Luke notes plainly, they watched him, table fellowship continuing even while suspicion sits at the same table. A certain man before him had the dropsy, a swelling from fluid retention that Luke the physician names by its proper term rather than a vague description. The bench reads the placement as no accident, since a man in visible need is present at a meal where Jesus is already being tested.

Luke 14:3-4

Jesus speaks first this time, unto the lawyers and Pharisees, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day, putting the question before them rather than waiting to be accused. They held their peace, unwilling to say no outright and unwilling to concede the point either, and Jesus took the man, healed him, and let him go without waiting for their answer. The bench notes the healing again requires nothing of the man himself, an unbidden mercy exactly as at the synagogue of the previous chapter.

Luke 14:5-6

Jesus presses the silent room with an argument from their own practice, which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day, an act of ordinary rescue no one there would refuse to perform. They could not answer him again to these things, the same result as the synagogue argument of chapter 13 repeated almost word for word. The bench reads the repetition as deliberate on Luke's part, the same silencing argument working twice because the objection it answers never actually changes.

Luke 14:7-9

Jesus puts forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms, watching an ordinary social habit rather than waiting for a formal dispute to teach from. Sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden, and the host say, Give this man place, and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room is the scenario named, public embarrassment following public self-promotion. The bench reads the counsel as drawn straight from wisdom literature's own advice about self-exaltation before a ruler, applied here to an ordinary wedding feast.

Luke 14:10-11

The counsel reverses direction, go and sit down in the lowest room, so that the host himself comes and says, Friend, go up higher, and honour is given publicly rather than claimed. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted states the principle the story illustrates, a saying repeated elsewhere in Luke at moments of reversal. The bench notes the point is not etiquette for its own sake but the same reversal thread running through the whole Gospel, position sought is lost and position yielded is given.

Luke 14:12-14

Jesus turns from the guests to the host himself, when thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours, since an invitation among equals invites its own repayment and nothing more. When thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind names the guest list that cannot recompense, and thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just moves the payment out of this life entirely. The bench reads the counsel as of a piece with the chapter's other reversal, hospitality aimed at those who cannot return it rather than at those who will.

Luke 14:15

One of them that sat at meat with him hears these things and says, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God, a pious commonplace about the messianic banquet that every table there would have agreed with in principle. The bench notes the remark costs the speaker nothing, an approving comment on someone else's future feast rather than any self-examination, and Jesus answers it with a parable that turns the comfortable blessing into a warning. The great supper that follows is his direct response to this one sentence.

Luke 14:16-18

A certain man made a great supper, and bade many, sending his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come, for all things are now ready, the double invitation matching known custom, a first invitation naming the date and a second announcing the hour. They all with one consent began to make excuse, and the first offers, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it, a transaction the bench notes no buyer would leave unexamined until the sale was already made. The refusal is dressed as reasonable business, which is exactly what makes it damning.

Luke 14:19-20

five yoke of oxen: Another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them, a second flimsy excuse from a man of some property, since ten oxen would already have been tested before purchase. Another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come, the third excuse and the flattest of all, offering no apology and citing a duty the Law itself would not have used to bar a man from every feast. The bench reads the three excuses as rising in triviality, land, livestock, and marriage each claimed as sufficient reason to refuse an invitation already accepted.

Luke 14:21-22

That servant came and shewed his lord these things, and the master of the house being angry said, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind, the very guest list Jesus had just told his host to invite in verse 13. The servant reports, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room, the house not yet full even after gathering in every outcast the city held. The bench notes the anger falls on the first-invited alone, not on the poor who are brought in gladly and without excuse.

Luke 14:23-24

highways and hedges, and compel them to come in: The lord sends the servant further still, into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled, the search widening from the city's streets to the open country roads where travelers and vagrants would be found. Compel names urgency of persuasion, not force against the will, since the whole scene is an invitation extended, not an arrest. None of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper closes the parable on the first guests alone, their exclusion self-chosen rather than imposed, three ordinary excuses proving fatal to a place already reserved.

Luke 14:25-27

Great multitudes go with him, and he turns to say to them, If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple, a Semitic idiom of comparative preference rather than a command to literal hatred, love for Christ so far surpassing every other love that lesser loves look like hatred beside it. Whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple names the same demand in its sharpest form, since the cross in that world meant only one thing, a condemned man's own execution beam. The bench reads Jesus turning from the crowd's easy following to the cost none of them had yet counted.

Luke 14:28-30

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it, a picture drawn from a builder every hearer could picture, since an abandoned foundation was a familiar and shameful sight. Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him names the public failure such carelessness invites. The bench reads the parable as urging honest reckoning before commitment, not discouragement from the commitment itself, matching the warning of verse 27 with practical counsel.

Luke 14:31-33

Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand, a second picture from statecraft rather than building, weighing forces before committing to a battle already outnumbered two to one. While the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace names the wiser course when the odds are seen clearly. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple applies both pictures at once, the bench reading the demand as total rather than partial, whatever a man's own tally of the cost turns out to be.

Luke 14:34-35

Salt is good: Salt is good, but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned, a closing image asking what remains when the very thing that gives salt its use is gone. It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill, but men cast it out, the useless salt of the region's mineral deposits, mixed with enough impurity to lose its flavor while looking unchanged, a fact the bench notes as known to Luke's first readers from the salt flats near the Dead Sea. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear closes the chapter as it closes several of Jesus' hardest sayings, the cost of discipleship left to settle in the hearer rather than softened at the end.
