Jeremiah 35:1-5

in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah: The scene is staged rather than accidental: Jeremiah brings the whole Rechabite clan into a chamber of the Lord's house and sets full cups before them, an experiment conducted in public to make a point Judah could see with its own eyes. The chapter's date, the days of Jehoiakim, places the episode earlier than the Zedekiah oracles that surround it in the book, a reminder the commentators give that Jeremiah is arranged by theme more than by strict order. The stage is set for a contrast Jeremiah did not need to explain, obedience offered wine it will refuse against a nation offered wine it will not refuse and everything else besides.

Jeremiah 35:6-12

We will drink no wine: The Rechabites answer with their whole history: Jonadab the son of Rechab, the ally who rode with Jehu against Baal two centuries earlier, bound his sons to a permanent discipline, no wine, no houses, no fields, a tent-dwelling life kept so they would remain strangers in the land. They report keeping it whole, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters, for as long as the command has stood, and explain their presence in Jerusalem as a wartime exception forced by the Chaldean and Syrian armies rather than a change of heart. Gill and Clarke both read the clan's fidelity across two centuries as the whole force of the object lesson, an ancestral rule about wine kept perfectly against a covenant with the living God kept hardly at all.

Jeremiah 35:13-14

Will ye not receive instruction: The Lord turns the object lesson into a direct question for Judah, will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words, the whole scene now aimed at Jerusalem rather than at the guests who sat for it. The words of Jonadab are performed, his sons still keep the rule to this very day, while the Lord's own words, spoken rising early and speaking, have gone unheard by the people he actually owns. Henry marks the comparison as deliberately shaming, a human father's command outlasting and outperforming the living God's, not because the command was better but because the sons chose to keep it.

Jeremiah 35:15-17

all my servants the prophets: The Lord widens the charge into the book's whole complaint, I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, the same standing patience Jeremiah has already voiced for himself now spoken for the whole prophetic line before him. The offer was plain, return, amend, stop serving other gods, and stay in the land already given; the answer was the same refusal repeated, ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me. Barnes reads verse 17's sentence, all the evil that I have pronounced against them, as the direct legal consequence of that refusal, judgment following disobedience the way it does throughout the book.

Jeremiah 35:18-19

the house of the Rechabites: The clan that kept a man's word for two hundred years receives a promise from God's own mouth: Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever, a household without land or vineyard given a permanence Judah had just forfeited. Henry and Gill both note the shape of the reward, standing before the Lord echoes the language used of priests and of faithful servants, honor extended to outsiders who kept a lesser law rather than to the covenant people who broke a greater one. The chapter closes without further comment, the contrast between verses 11 and 19 left to make its own case.
