Jeremiah 20:1-3

chief governor in the house of the Lord: Pashur son of Immer holds a senior post over the temple guard, and when he hears Jeremiah preaching the Tophet sign just delivered in that same courtyard he moves against him directly rather than merely reporting him. Jeremiah is beaten and put in the stocks at the high gate of Benjamin, a public restraint meant to shame him before anyone who passed. Released the next morning, Jeremiah answers not with silence but with a new name for his captor, Magor-missabib, terror on every side, turning Pashur's own violence into the title of what is coming to him.

Jeremiah 20:4-6

I will make thee a terror to thyself: The new name is unpacked as a personal sentence, Pashur made a terror to himself and to his own friends, forced to watch them fall by the sword he denied was coming. The same word widens at once to the whole nation, all Judah given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and to the city's own wealth, its strength, its labor and its treasures all carried off to the same captor. Pashur himself is named among the exiles, told he will die and be buried in Babylon rather than in the land his prophesied lies promised he would keep.

Jeremiah 20:7-9

thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: The confession opens as bluntly as any in the book, a charge laid against God himself for a calling that has brought Jeremiah nothing but mockery and derision every day he speaks it. Calvin reads the complaint as the honest cry of a man who did not choose this weight and cannot see why obedience should cost so much, not rebellion against the call but exhaustion inside it. The resolve to stop speaking breaks against something stronger than his own will, the word in his heart like a fire shut up in his bones until he is weary with holding it in and cannot stay silent, compulsion rather than choice driving the ministry forward.

Jeremiah 20:10-13

fear on every side: The phrase fear on every side, magor missabib in Hebrew, returns from the name Jeremiah gave Pashur and now describes his own daily experience, familiars watching for him to stumble so they can report him and take their revenge. Against that surveillance he sets a confidence that does not waver, the Lord is with me as a mighty terrible one, so that his persecutors will stumble instead and carry an everlasting shame that will never be forgotten. The unit ends in worship rather than complaint, sing unto the Lord, for he has delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers, praise breaking out before the deliverance has visibly arrived.

Jeremiah 20:14-18

Cursed be the day wherein I was born: The praise of verse 13 collapses without transition into the bleakest lament in the book, Jeremiah cursing the day of his birth and the man who brought his father the news of it. The wish that he had died in the womb, or that his mother's body had been his grave, runs on Job's own pattern at Job 3, grief that finds words only by unmaking the day it began. The confession ends unanswered, wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame, with no divine reply recorded in the text at all, the silence itself left standing as part of what the chapter shows about the cost of the call named back at 1:5.
