Ezekiel 6:1-3

The word comes to Ezekiel with an unusual address, prophesy not to the people directly but to the mountains of Israel, and through them to the hills, rivers and valleys, the whole terrain that carried the nation's worship. The Lord announces a sword against them and the destruction of the high places, the local shrines scattered across the hill country where idolatry had rooted itself alongside the official cult. Henry reads the address to the land itself as a way of showing that the coming judgment reaches the physical places of sin, not the people only, since the high places had become as much the offenders as those who built them. Gill notes that speaking to inanimate mountains follows a prophetic convention of calling creation to witness a covenant charge, the same device Moses uses in Deuteronomy 32.

Ezekiel 6:4-7

The judgment reaches the whole apparatus of the high places, altars made desolate, images broken, and the slain of Israel's own people cast down before the very idols they had trusted, their bones scattered around the altars they had built. Keil reads the juxtaposition, corpses among broken images, as the sign's deliberate point, the idols shown powerless to protect even the ground where they stood. The unit ends on the book's recognition formula in its first landing of the chapter, and ye shall know that I am the Lord, the stated purpose behind the destruction rather than judgment left to speak for itself. Clarke notes that cities and high places are named together, so the desolation is total across the land rather than confined to the shrines alone.

Ezekiel 6:8-10

In the middle of total judgment the Lord names an exception, a remnant that escapes the sword and is scattered among the nations rather than destroyed with the rest. Their exile is not left empty of purpose, they shall remember me among the nations, and shall loathe themselves for the evils they have committed, a broken and contrite response the earlier chapters have not yet shown from this people. Wesley reads the remnant's self-loathing as the true turning point the whole book is aimed at, judgment meant to produce grief over sin rather than merely to punish it. The recognition formula returns with an added clause, I have not said in vain that I would do this evil, answering in advance any hearer tempted to think the earlier threats were empty.

Ezekiel 6:11-13

The Lord commands Ezekiel to act out grief and contempt together, clapping and stamping while crying alas over the house of Israel's abominations, a gesture the sign-acts of this book use elsewhere for lament turned to scorn. Three judgments are then distributed by distance, pestilence for those far off, the sword for those near, famine for those besieged within the city, so that no location offers safety from all three at once. Gill reads the spread across distance as proof the judgment covers the whole land by design, not a local disaster that spares those who flee far enough. The chapter's third recognition formula lands here, tied specifically to the slain lying among their idols on every high hill and under every thick oak, the very sites named in verse four now littered with the bodies of their worshippers.

Ezekiel 6:14

The chapter's final judgment reaches the whole land rather than the mountains alone, made more desolate than the wilderness toward Diblath, a comparison naming a specific and evidently barren region as the measure of what is coming. Henry reads the comparison as deliberately concrete, the exiles given a known wasteland to picture rather than a vague image of ruin. The chapter's fourth and final recognition formula closes the unit exactly as the first one opened it, the destruction of every high place answered by the knowledge of the one true Lord standing behind it. Clarke notes some manuscripts read Riblah for Diblath, a swap of a single letter, though the sense of a remote and barren place stands either way.
