Ezekiel 27:1-3

The Lord instructs the prophet to compose a formal dirge, take up a lamentation for Tyrus, shifting the book's form from courtroom sentence to funeral song even before the city has fallen, mourning announced ahead of the event it mourns. The city is addressed by its own boast, O Tyrus, thou hast said, I am of perfect beauty, situated at the entry of the sea and serving as merchant of the people for many isles, a self-description the chapter spends its next twenty verses filling in before it collapses. Henry reads the lament's placement here, ahead of the fall it describes, as prophetic certainty treated as already accomplished, the standard shape of Hebrew prophetic speech.

Ezekiel 27:4-7

The chapter's long central section pictures Tyre itself as a magnificent ship, built from the resources of the whole known world: fir boards from Senir, cedar masts from Lebanon, oars from the oaks of Bashan, benches inlaid with ivory from the isles of Chittim. The sail is fine linen from Egypt, and the covering is blue and purple from the isles of Elishah, royal dye goods that mark the vessel as ceremonial as much as functional. Keil reads the ship figure as deliberate, a trading city pictured as its own finest export, assembled piece by piece from every nation it did business with.

Ezekiel 27:8-9

The crew is drawn the same way as the timber, Zidon and Arvad supplying mariners, Tyre's own wise men serving as pilots, and the ancients of Gebal, the Phoenician city the Greeks called Byblos, working as calkers who sealed the ship's seams. All the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy merchandise widens the picture from one vessel to a whole fleet drawing on Tyre's harbor for its trade. Gill notes the specificity of each city's trade, mariners here, pilots there, calkers elsewhere, as evidence of a maritime economy organized by specialized skill rather than by chance.

Ezekiel 27:10-11

Military glory joins commercial glory: Persia, Lud and Phut supply soldiers who hang shield and helmet in thee, decorative arms rather than a garrison under siege, and Arvad's men stand watch on the walls beside the Gammadims in the towers. They set forth thy comeliness and have made thy beauty perfect treat even Tyre's army as an ornament to its appearance, weapons hung for display the way jewelry is hung on a person. Fairbairn reads the militarized decoration as part of the chapter's larger point, that Tyre had turned every resource, including its defense, into an expression of wealth and beauty rather than raw necessity.

Ezekiel 27:12-15

The trade list opens with Tarshish, likely a distant western port, supplying silver, iron, tin and lead in bulk, and turns next to Javan, Tubal and Meshech, peoples of Asia Minor, who traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market, one of Scripture's plainest references to a trade in human beings run through Tyre's markets. Togarmah in the far north supplies horses and mules, and Dedan in the Arabian south supplies ivory and ebony, the list stretching from one edge of the known world to the other within four verses. Clarke reads the human trafficking named at verse 13 without any softening, the same matter-of-fact list format used for iron and ivory applied to men, letting the weight of it sit in the plainness of the accounting.

Ezekiel 27:16-18

Syria supplies emeralds, purple and fine linen, and then the list turns to Judah and the land of Israel, they were thy merchants, naming Israel not as a special covenant nation here but as one trading partner among many, selling wheat, honey, oil and balm like any other supplier in the ledger. Damascus follows with the wine of Helbon and white wool, the list moving north to south and back without pause for the nation the rest of the book treats as central. Henry reads Israel's appearance in this ordinary commercial list as part of the chapter's irony, a people meant for a holy calling reduced in Tyre's own accounting to one line among trading nations.

Ezekiel 27:19-22

The list continues through Dan and Javan with iron, cassia and calamus, Dedan again with precious cloths for chariots, and Arabia with the princes of Kedar supplying lambs, rams and goats, the pastoral trade of the desert tribes entering the same ledger as the manufactured goods of the cities. Sheba and Raamah close the section with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold, the luxury trade of the far south reaching Tyre's market alongside everything else the ancient world produced. Gill reads the sheer breadth of the list, spices to sheep, iron to gold, as the chapter's own argument for the scale of what falls when the city falls.

Ezekiel 27:23-25

Haran, Canneh, Eden, Asshur and Chilmad close the roll of trading partners, supplying rich apparel bound with cords and made of cedar, and the list turns from goods to acclaim: the ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market, and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas. This is the chapter's high point, the ship fully built, fully crewed, fully laden and fully praised, immediately before the turn the next two verses bring. Keil reads the placement deliberately, the fullest description of Tyre's glory set right beside the account of its sinking, so the reader feels the height before the fall.

Ezekiel 27:26-27

The turn comes without warning: thy rowers have brought thee into great waters, the east wind hath broken thee in the midst of the seas, the same sea that carried Tyre's wealth now the agent of its destruction. Everything named across the chapter's long inventory, riches, fairs, merchandise, mariners, pilots, calkers, men of war, falls together into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin, the ship figure completed as a shipwreck rather than a voyage. Fairbairn reads the abruptness as intentional, no siege described here the way chapter 26 describes one, only the sudden collapse of a vessel the wind has broken.

Ezekiel 27:28-32

The mourning that follows matches the scale of the loss: the suburbs shall shake at the cry of the pilots, and the mariners and pilots come down from their ships to stand on the land, casting dust on their heads and making themselves utterly bald, ancient mourning rites turned toward a city rather than a person. The lament proper begins at verse 32, what city is like Tyrus, like the destroyed in the midst of the sea, and commentators have long noted how closely Revelation 18 echoes this scene in its own lament over Babylon's fall, merchants and shipmasters weeping at a distance over the ruin of a great trading city. Henry reads the parallel as evidence that John drew on Ezekiel's dirge for the shape of his own, one trading city's fall supplying the language for another's.

Ezekiel 27:33-36

The closing verses look back before looking forward: thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches states plainly what the ship figure has shown at length, universal benefit flowing from Tyre's trade to nations far beyond it. The judgment lands in the same commercial terms it built the lament in, the isles astonished, kings sore afraid, and the merchants among the people shall hiss at thee, the market's own participants reacting to the news the way traders react to a failed venture. Keil reads the final line, thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt be any more, as closing the chapter on the same note chapter 26 closed on, certain and final in its wording; how fully later history mapped onto the image is a question the commentators answer differently.
