Acts 12:1-3

Herod here is Herod Agrippa I, grandson of Herod the Great, a client king popular with the Jewish establishment for his outward observance of the law, and Luke dates the persecution about that time, tying it to the pressure already building against the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword, the first apostolic martyrdom the book records and a stark fulfillment of the Lord's own word to the sons of Zebedee that they would drink his cup. Seeing that it pleased the Jews, Herod proceeded further and took Peter also, during the days of unleavened bread, timing the arrest to the Passover season when Jerusalem was full and popular approval mattered most to a king who ruled by it.

Acts 12:4-5

Four quaternions of soldiers, sixteen men rotating in four watches of four, held Peter under a security meant to be Stephen-proof, Herod intending after the Passover to bring him out for public judgment. The word rendered Easter in the King James text is the Passover, pascha, the feast still running, and the translation reflects the language of the translators' own day rather than a different festival. Against that guard the church answers with the one weapon Luke sets beside it, prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him, and the chapter's whole turn rests on that contrast.

Acts 12:6-8

bound with two chains: The night before Herod meant to bring him forth, Peter is not anxious but asleep, bound with two chains between two soldiers, a detail the bench reads as its own quiet witness to the peace Paul later commends in Philippians. The angel of the Lord stands over him, light fills the cell, and the angel smites Peter on the side to wake him, the chains falling off his hands without a word spoken to loose them. The instructions that follow, gird thyself, bind on thy sandals, cast thy garment about thee, are ordinary and unhurried, a deliverance without panic matching the prayer that asked for it.

Acts 12:9-10

Peter follows the angel and wist not that it was true which was done, thinking he saw a vision, the same word used of his trance in chapter ten, so that his own senses cannot yet certify what is happening to him. They pass the first and second ward to the iron gate that leadeth unto the city, which opened of its own accord, no human hand named at any point in the escape. The angel departs the moment the street is reached, leaving Peter alone to work out for himself what has just happened to him.

Acts 12:11

Only now, alone in the street, does Peter come to himself and recognize what the angel accomplished, that the Lord hath sent his angel and delivered him out of the hand of Herod and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. His certainty arrives after the miracle rather than during it, an honest detail Luke leaves standing rather than smoothing into instant recognition. The expectation of the people names the popular anticipation of Peter's public trial and probable execution that Herod had been counting on.

Acts 12:12-14

the house of Mary the mother of John: Peter goes to the house of Mary the mother of John Mark, evidently a home of some size since many were gathered together praying there, the very prayer of verse five now shown in session. Rhoda, a servant girl, comes to answer his knock, and her joy is so complete that she opens not the gate but runs in to report Peter standing at the door, leaving him waiting on his own doorstep of deliverance. The scene's small comedy, the church praying for exactly what it cannot believe has happened, is left by Luke to speak for itself.

Acts 12:15-17

Thou art mad meets Rhoda's report, and when she insists, the household answers it is his angel, evidently sharing the popular belief in a guardian angel who might appear in a person's own likeness. Peter continues knocking until they open the door and are astonished, the very deliverance they prayed for now standing in front of them almost too large to receive. He beckons them to silence, declares how the Lord brought him out, and instructs them to tell James, the Lord's brother now leading the Jerusalem church, and the brethren, before departing to another place Luke leaves unnamed for Peter's own safety.

Acts 12:18-19

Morning brings no small stir among the soldiers over what had become of Peter, and Herod's examination of the keepers ends in their execution, a Roman military custom that held guards liable with their own lives for a prisoner's escape. Herod then goes down from Judea to Caesarea and abides there, the narrative's quiet way of moving him off the Jerusalem stage before the judgment scene that follows. The soldiers' deaths sit as an uncomfortable cost of the deliverance, one the text records without further comment.

Acts 12:20-23

Herod's quarrel with Tyre and Sidon, cities dependent on his territory for grain, is patched through Blastus the king's chamberlain, and on a set day Herod addresses the delegation arrayed in royal apparel that Josephus separately describes as a robe woven of silver catching the morning sun. The people's shout, the voice of a god and not of a man, is flattery Herod does not refuse, and immediately the angel of the Lord smites him because he gave not God the glory. Josephus records the same event in the Antiquities, a sudden internal pain following the acclamation and death five days later, an outside confirmation the bench treats as one of the strongest points of contact between Luke and secular history in the whole book.

Acts 12:24

But the word of God grew and multiplied closes the persecution with the fourth of the book's growth panels, Luke's recurring seal on a completed section of the narrative. It ties opposition, even a king's own death, back into the single work the whole book exists to trace: Herod moves against the church and dies, and the word he could not silence keeps advancing without him. The verse functions as Luke's own summary judgment on the whole chapter, a stronger claim than a simple transition line.

Acts 12:25

Barnabas and Saul return from Jerusalem, having fulfilled their ministry of famine relief begun at 11:29-30, and take with them John, whose surname was Mark, the young man from the very house where the church had prayed for Peter's release. Mark's presence here quietly sets up the sharp disagreement of 15:37-39, when Paul refuses to take him again after he departed from them at Pamphylia. Luke gives no verdict on either man in that later dispute, only naming both Paul's judgment and Barnabas's, so the reader meets the argument as Luke presents it rather than as settled in one man's favor.
