2 Kings 3:1-3

the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat: Jehoram is measured against both parents in one sentence: evil, but not like Ahab and Jezebel, since he puts away the image of Baal his father made. The reform stops short. He still cleaves to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the golden calves at Bethel and Dan, and the narrator uses the same refrain that opened at Jeroboam himself in 1 Ki 12:28 and will close the northern kingdom's story at 2 Ki 17:21-22. Every northern king in these books is weighed on that one scale, and a partial reform still fails it.

2 Kings 3:4-5

The tribute of lambs, rams and wool describes a pastoral kingdom paying in the coin it had, and Moab's rebellion follows Ahab's death the way vassal states test a new reign. The Moabite Stone, Mesha's own inscription found at Dibon in 1868, tells this same history from the other side: it names Omri by name as the king who afflicted Moab and boasts of Chemosh's deliverance in Mesha's own words. The traditional reading of the biblical account leads; the stele is independent evidence that the rebellion and its Israelite rulers were real events outside the text.

2 Kings 3:6-8

Jehoram's muster and his message to Jehoshaphat, wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle, repeat Ahab's own summons before Ramoth-gilead in 1 Ki 22:4 almost word for word, down to Jehoshaphat's identical answer, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses. Jehoshaphat's readiness to yoke Judah to a northern king's war is the same pattern the chronicler will later rebuke him for at 2 Chr 19:2, lovest thou them that hate the LORD. The route chosen, through the wilderness of Edom, adds a third king and a longer march to an alliance already made.

2 Kings 3:9-10

Seven days through the wilderness of Edom leave three armies and their cattle without water, and the crisis exposes the difference between the two kings before Elisha ever speaks. Jehoram's response is fatalism dressed as piety, alas, that the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab, blaming God for a route his own alliance chose. It is the same reflex Ahab showed toward Elijah at 1 Ki 18:17, trouble laid at the prophet's door rather than the king's.

2 Kings 3:11-12

Jehoshaphat's question repeats his own words to Ahab at 1 Ki 22:7 almost exactly, the one instinct that never fails him even in bad company. The servant who names Elisha does it by a small credential rather than a title, which poured water on the hands of Elijah, the posture of an apprentice rather than an office. That same humility is what the mantle at 1 Ki 19:19-21 was thrown over, and the servant's memory of it is the reason three kings now go down to find him.

2 Kings 3:13-14

Elisha sends Jehoram to the prophets of his father and mother before he will speak a word, refusing the king's own scale of religion. His oath, as the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, is Elijah's own sentence from 1 Ki 18:15 carried over syllable for syllable into his successor's mouth, the double portion of spirit made audible. Elisha says plainly that only Jehoshaphat's presence turns his face toward Jehoram at all.

2 Kings 3:15

Music settles Elisha's spirit, ruffled by Jehoram's presence, before the hand of the LORD comes upon him, the same pairing of instrument and prophetic inspiration Saul met among the company of prophets with psaltery and harp at 1 Sam 10:5-6. The prophetic schools evidently kept this as a regular practice rather than an isolated event. The word requires quiet first and utterance after, not the other way round.

2 Kings 3:16-18

The command asks for labor before the miracle, ditches dug in a dry valley with no cloud in sight, and the promise that follows refuses ordinary means on purpose: no wind, no rain, yet the valley filled with water. Water without a storm to send it is named a light thing beside the greater gift, the Moabites themselves delivered into their hand. The order runs the same course as the widow's jars in 2 Ki 4:1-7, obedience supplying the vessel that the LORD alone fills.

2 Kings 3:19-20

The instruction to fell every good tree sits beside Deut 20:19-20, which forbids destroying an enemy's fruit trees in siege. The two are commonly read as different cases rather than a contradiction: Deuteronomy governs a war of conquest meant to end in settling the land, while this campaign against Moab has no plan to occupy it, only to break its power. The water arrives the next morning at the hour of the meat offering, with neither wind nor rain to account for it, timed to Israel's own act of worship rather than to weather.

2 Kings 3:21-23

Moab gathers everyone able to bear arms, old and young, and stands at the border to meet the invasion. The next morning's sun turns the standing water red, and the Moabites read it as three armies that destroyed one another in the night rather than as sunrise on a flood, a misreading that draws them off their guard toward the spoil. The narrator gives no comment on the mistake beyond letting its consequence follow in the next verse.

2 Kings 3:24-25

Israel executes the instructions of verse 19 to the letter, cities beaten down, land marred with stones, wells stopped, good trees felled, until only Kir-haraseth's walls are left standing under siege by slingers. The narrator's one exception, only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof, marks the campaign's edge rather than its failure; the royal city holds while the countryside around it does not. Kir-haraseth is identified with the fortress later called Kerak, east of the Dead Sea.

2 Kings 3:26-27

Mesha's sortie toward the king of Edom fails, and with the city about to fall he offers his own heir, the son who should have reigned in his stead, as a burnt offering on the wall where the besiegers can see it. What follows, there was great indignation against Israel, is a genuine crux and the readings differ on whose indignation it names. Wesley reads it as Israel's own horror and grief at having driven a father to this, ending the war in revulsion at what their siege had provoked; Barnes names the same possibility alongside another, that Judah and Edom were indignant at Israel specifically for causing the pollution of such a sacrifice; and the Hebrew word for wrath elsewhere names the LORD's own anger, at Num 1:53 and Josh 22:20, which Keil weighs as a live if unproven third reading. The text does not say which, and the campaign ends there, the kings withdrawing to their own land.
