2 Corinthians 12:1

It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory: Paul has been forced into the fool's boast by the false apostles, and he names his distaste for it before he continues, glorying in weakness rather than credentials being the only kind he will own. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: the phrase pairs two distinct things, optasiai, visible showings, and apokalypseis, disclosed truths, and the bench reads the chapter's whole account as one item on the true apostle's resume that his rivals cannot match, since it came unbidden from Christ rather than sought after.

2 Corinthians 12:2-4

caught up to the third heaven: I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago: the bench reads the third-person account as Paul's own testimony spoken with deliberate reserve, the standard reading since Chrysostom, since no other candidate fits the surrounding argument about Paul's own thorn. Whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth: the site's unseen-world posture receives the account plainly rather than explaining it away, an actual rapture into paradise that even the man who experienced it could not classify by ordinary categories. Caught up to the third heaven and how that he was caught up into paradise: harpazo names a seizing not chosen by the one seized, and the commentators note the escalation from third heaven to paradise as the same place named twice, God's own dwelling above the visible sky and the fallen air. He heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter: arrheta rhemata, things not permitted to be spoken, and the exposition names the silence as Scripture's own rather than a gap to be filled, Paul himself forbidden the very disclosure that would have ended every argument at Corinth in his favor.

2 Corinthians 12:5-6

Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities: Paul splits himself in two, the man who was caught up and the man who writes the letter, and refuses to let the first man's experience become the second man's boast. For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: he could add more and still speak truly, and the bench reads this as proof the third heaven account is no invention, a liar with such material would not have stopped. But now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be: the measure of an apostle is the visible life and labor, not a private ecstasy no one else can verify, and Paul deliberately keeps the two apart.

2 Corinthians 12:7

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me: the revelation of verses 2 through 4 is now given its consequence, a skolops, a stake or splinter driving pain, sent to guard the very man who received the vision from the pride it could have produced. The thorn's identity is a question Scripture leaves open and the bench has held as genuinely ambiguous for centuries: a bodily affliction, commonly proposed as an eye condition read alongside Galatians 4:15's willingness to pluck out their own eyes for Paul; a recurring persecution, the messenger of Satan taken as the opposition itself; or a direct spiritual assault. No verse settles which, and the exposition names the candidates with their holders rather than choosing among them. Lest I should be exalted above measure: the phrase repeats from the verse's opening, framing the whole thorn as a mercy against pride rather than a punishment for sin.

2 Corinthians 12:8-9

For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me: Paul prays directly to Christ for the thorn's removal, three definite petitions, and the bench notes the prayer's own answer to any reading that would make the thorn evidence God never heals or never removes affliction, since Paul asked exactly that and was answered, only not as he asked. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness: the answer is a present-tense promise, arkei, is sufficient right now and continually, and the exposition keeps this verse inside the site's standing posture, the thorn is never taught as God's general refusal to heal nor as an argument against the present ministry of the Spirit's gifts, but as this one instance where a specific affliction was given a specific purpose and a specific answer. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me: episkenoo pictures the power of Christ pitching its tent over Paul, the same tabernacling language the chapter's earlier body-tent figure has already used, weakness becoming the very place strength chooses to dwell.

2 Corinthians 12:10

Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: the list widens the thorn's single affliction into every category of Paul's suffering, and eudokeo, take pleasure, states a settled disposition rather than a passing mood. For when I am weak, then am I strong: the letter's signature paradox reaches its summit here, the same thread run from the sentence of death in chapter 1 through the treasure in earthen vessels of chapter 4, and the bench reads the sentence as the whole epistle's theology of ministry compressed into seven words, Christ's strength displacing the minister's own precisely where the minister has none left to offer.

2 Corinthians 12:11

I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: Paul closes the fool's boast begun in chapter 11 by placing the blame where it belongs, the Corinthians' silence before the false apostles' claims forced from him a defense he never wanted to make. For in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing: the hyperlian apostles, the super-apostles, are named again with the same edge as 11:5, and the bench reads though I be nothing as Paul's own qualifier on his defense, matching in credentials while claiming none of the credit, the same humility that will not let the third heaven become his boast.

2 Corinthians 12:12-13

Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds: Paul points to attested miracles already performed in their own sight as evidence no rival could produce, the continuationist reading of these gifts holding at full strength as the plain sense of the text, semeia, terata, and dynameis all present among the Corinthians through his ministry. For what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it be that I myself was not burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong: the one point of Corinthian inferiority Paul will grant is bitterly ironic, that he refused to take their money, and the bench hears the sarcasm plainly, since his rivals had made his financial independence into an accusation rather than a courtesy.

2 Corinthians 12:14-15

Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you: Paul restates his financial policy as he prepares his third visit, the object of his ministry stated plainly, the Corinthians themselves and not their money. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children: the family figure reverses the world's usual complaint against a minister, a father saves for his children rather than draining them, and Paul applies it to his own refusal of support. I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved: dapanao and ekdapanao together picture total expenditure, spending resources and then being spent as the resource, and the bench reads the closing clause as plain pastoral grief, an imbalance of love Paul states without bitterness.

2 Corinthians 12:16-18

But be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile: Paul voices the accusation his enemies were making, that his refusal of support was itself a trick to gain by other means, and the bench reads the sentence as quoted slander rather than confession, the sarcasm continuing from verse 13. Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent unto you? I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother, did Titus make a gain of you, walked we not in the same spirit, walked we not in the same steps: Paul appeals to a track record any Corinthian could check, Titus and the unnamed brother having already handled the collection with the transparency chapter 8 describes.

2 Corinthians 12:19

we speak before God in Christ: Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: Paul denies that the whole preceding defense has been self-justification aimed at their approval, and states instead the higher court he answers to, speaking in Christ's presence and by Christ's authority rather than in the dock before the Corinthians. But we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying: the stated purpose of every hard word in the letter is named plainly, oikodome, building up, and the bench reads the verse as the key to the whole apologia, defense offered for the church's good and not the apostle's vindication.

2 Corinthians 12:20-21

For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults: Paul names the fear behind the whole letter, that his coming visit will expose a congregation still ruled by the works of the flesh his earlier letter had already addressed, the list echoing Galatians 5's catalogue of division. And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed: the chapter closes on grief rather than triumph, the apostle who has just claimed strength in weakness now fearing tears over unrepented sin, and the bench reads the verse as proof the fool's boast was never Paul's true burden, the church's repentance was.
