Hannah's song sets the book's theme: 'There is none holy as Jehovah... neither is there any rock like our God.' The bows of the mighty are broken and the stumbling girded with strength; He killeth and maketh alive, and raiseth the poor from the dust to sit with princes. It reaches past its own century to a king not yet born (He will exalt the horn of his anointed) and Mary sings its pattern again in the Magnificat (Luke 1). Against it stand Hophni and Phinehas, sons of Belial who knew not Jehovah, seizing sacrificial flesh by force; a man of God says both shall die in one day, and God will raise up a faithful priest.
