1 Peter 2:1-3

The chapter opens with a command built on 1:22's love just commanded: laying aside all malice, guile, hypocrisies, envies, and evil speakings, five vices that all corrode the community from within rather than from outside pressure. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word pictures the same new birth of 1:23 still hungry, the word itself the nourishment that produces growth. If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious quotes Psalm 34:8 directly, the same psalm the letter draws on again at 3:10-12, appetite for the word growing out of a taste already known.

1 Peter 2:4-5

To whom coming names Christ a living stone, a paradox in itself, disallowed indeed of men but chosen of God and precious, human rejection and divine choice stated side by side without resolving the tension. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house extends the same life to every believer, each one a stone in a temple with no other cornerstone. An holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ applies priestly language to the whole church, the first line of the chapter's Exodus 19:5-6 summit at verse 9.

1 Peter 2:6-8

Three Old Testament stone texts are laid one on another, the same three the Lord and Paul both build with: Isaiah 28:16's chief corner stone, elect and precious, for the one who believes; Psalm 118:22's stone which the builders disallowed, now made the head of the corner; and Isaiah 8:14's stone of stumbling and rock of offence for the disobedient. The same stone that saves the believer offends the unbeliever, precious to one, a stumbling block to the other, and both outcomes are traced to the one stone rather than two different objects. Whereunto also they were appointed has been read as appointment to stumbling because of unbelief rather than an appointment to unbelief itself, a distinction the traditions have argued carefully rather than settled.

1 Peter 2:9-10

Four titles from Exodus 19:5-6 are conferred on the church at once, a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people, Israel's own covenant names given to a body that includes Gentile believers. The titles are shared, not transferred: Israel's own election stands, Paul's own answer at Romans 11:1-2 and 11:28-29, and this verse extends covenant language to the church rather than announcing that Israel has lost it. Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God quotes Hosea's own not-my-people line, the same citation Paul makes at Romans 9:25-26 for Gentile inclusion, both apostles reading Hosea the same way.

1 Peter 2:11-12

Dearly beloved softens the appeal even as it repeats the letter's identity language, strangers and pilgrims, and grounds ethical instruction in identity rather than mere rule-keeping. Fleshly lusts, which war against the soul names an internal battle before any external one, the same warfare Paul describes at Galatians 5:17. Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles turns the private battle outward: visible good works answer slander and can turn watching pagans to glorify God in the day of visitation, mission carried by conduct where words are refused a hearing.

1 Peter 2:13-14

Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake instructs churches living under Nero to honor civil authority as a matter of obedience to God rather than mere prudence, whether the king as supreme or the governors he sends. The submission is for the Lord's sake, grounded in Christ rather than in the emperor's own merit, the same civil posture Paul commends at Romans 13:1-7. The letter never states an exception in so many words, but the church that first heard it already knew Peter's own answer before the council, we ought to obey God rather than men, and read this command inside that limit rather than against it.

1 Peter 2:15-17

Well doing is named the church's answer to slander, silencing ignorant accusation not by argument but by a life examined and found blameless. As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness balances the submission just commanded against any reading that would make Christian freedom an excuse for license, freedom and service held together rather than opposed. The closing chain of four short commands, honour all men, love the brotherhood, fear God, honour the king, orders every relationship in one breath, love reserved for the family of faith and honour extended to all, including Caesar.

1 Peter 2:18-20

Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward, addresses household slaves under masters they could not choose, the hardest of the letter's submission instructions and, like the parallel passage at Ephesians 6:5-9, regulation of a real institution rather than its endorsement. Thankworthy names the case that matters, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully, suffering born for God's sake rather than for one's own fault. What glory is it, if ye be buffeted for your faults draws the line sharply: patience under deserved punishment earns nothing, but patience in well doing while suffering unjustly is acceptable with God, the dignity of the suffering servant grounded in nothing the world can see.

1 Peter 2:21

For even hereunto were ye called turns the servants' hard case into every believer's calling, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, hupogrammon, a writing-copy for a child learning letters, tracing his own strokes exactly. That ye should follow his steps sets the pattern as imitation of a specific path rather than a vague ideal, and the three verses that follow trace that path feature by feature from the fourth Servant Song of Isaiah 53. The suffering servant theme that has run through the whole letter reaches its clearest statement here: Christ's own suffering is the copy every sufferer traces.

1 Peter 2:22

Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth quotes Isaiah 53:9 almost word for word, the sinless life as much a part of the Servant's portrait as the suffering itself. No sin covers his whole conduct, no guile his speech in particular, an inner and outer purity together. The line answers directly to the household instructions just given, since a servant unjustly accused could point to no perfect example but Christ's own recorded innocence.

1 Peter 2:23

When he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not describes a silence under provocation that is neither passivity nor resignation, since the next clause supplies its ground: but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously. The verb paradidomi, committed, hands the whole matter over to a higher court rather than absorbing it or avenging it personally. The pattern answers the letter's own earlier command at 2:19 to endure grief for conscience toward God, Christ himself the first to walk it.

1 Peter 2:24

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree states substitution in the plainest terms the chapter offers, the tree recalling Deuteronomy 21:23's curse on one hanged, carried by the sinless Servant in the guilty's place. That we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness names the purpose beyond forgiveness, a transferred allegiance from sin's rule to righteousness. By whose stripes ye were healed closes Isaiah 53:5's line, and the healing is read two ways with holders, the soul's healing from sin in its immediate context and, per the site's continuationist posture and Matthew 8:16-17's own citation of this same servant song for physical healing, an atonement whose scope reaches the body as well; neither reading is used here to erase the other.

1 Peter 2:25

For ye were as sheep going astray closes the servant song's own line from Isaiah 53:6, the wandering that needed no explanation to readers who knew sheep. But are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls names Christ with a double title, shepherd for the pastoral care already named at the chapter's opening image of milk and growth, and bishop, episkopos, overseer, the same word the letter will apply to human elders at 5:1-2 under this Chief Shepherd. The chapter that opened on newborn babes desiring milk closes on sheep found and shepherded, one sustained picture of a flock cared for from birth to return.
