1 Corinthians 9:1-2

Am I not an apostle: Am I not an apostle?: the first of four rising questions, and the second, am I not free, confirms the whole chapter answers a challenge to Paul's freedom, the very freedom chapter 8 has just argued the strong must sometimes lay down. Having seen the risen Lord was the apostolic qualification Acts 1:22 sets for filling Judas's place, and Paul claims it for himself as for the Twelve. The Corinthians themselves are his answer to any doubter, the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord, a congregation standing as living proof the way a signet authenticates a document.

1 Corinthians 9:3-4

Mine answer to them that do examine me is this: examine is anakrino, the word for a formal legal inquiry, and Paul writes as a man standing in the dock before self-appointed judges at Corinth. Have we not power to eat and to drink? opens the specific right in question, the apostle's claim to material support from the churches he serves, exousia meaning a right rather than mere ability. The bench notes that Paul is not defending an abstract principle here but his own long-standing practice of declining it, which the chapter will explain.

1 Corinthians 9:5-6

Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?: Peter, the Lord's brothers, and the other apostles traveled with believing wives supported by the churches, so the right Paul discusses is not hypothetical but the settled custom of his fellow workers. Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?: Barnabas independently chose the same tentmaking path Acts 18:3 records of Paul, so the renunciation is a joint apostolic choice rather than a personal deficiency in Paul's standing. The bench reads the naming of Cephas by name as evidence the Corinthians already knew and respected Peter's practice, sharpening the contrast with their treatment of Paul.

1 Corinthians 9:7

Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges?: three ordinary trades follow in the same verse, soldiering, farming, and shepherding, each assuming as a matter of course that labor draws support from what it produces. The bench connects the principle to the Lord's own teaching that the labourer is worthy of his hire, which Paul elsewhere cites as scripture alongside Deuteronomy (1 Timothy 5:18). The soldier and shepherd figures recur across Paul's letters for gospel ministry, and the flock image anticipates his shepherding language in later epistles.

1 Corinthians 9:8-10

Say I these things as a man?: Paul grounds a claim already argued from common trades in the written law itself, citing Deuteronomy 25:4, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn, keep-hard on the letter's it-is-written ledger. Doth God take care for oxen, or saith he it altogether for our sakes: the argument runs light to heavy, a common rabbinic pattern, not denying that God cares for animals but showing the law's chief aim reaches further, to the plowman and thresher who work in hope of a share. For our sakes, no doubt, this is written names the human application directly, and Paul draws the same verse again at 1 Timothy 5:18 for paid ministry.

1 Corinthians 9:11-12

If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?: Paul turns the plowing figure directly onto Corinth, the gospel he planted there being the far greater sowing against which material support is a small reaping. Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ: having established the right at length, Paul states plainly that he never exercised it at Corinth, a refusal the letter's opening chapters have already shown was misread by some as proof he lacked real apostolic standing. The bench notes the pastoral shrewdness of arguing the right fully before explaining why it was set aside, so the refusal cannot be mistaken for an admission of no claim.

1 Corinthians 9:13-14

Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?: the Levitical priesthood's portion from the sacrifices, set out in Numbers 18, is Paul's second line of proof, an arrangement his Jewish and Gentile readers alike could confirm from the temple's own practice. Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel: the Lord's own ordinance closes the argument, most likely the saying preserved at Luke 10:7 and Matthew 10:10, giving Paul's whole case its final and highest authority. Three grounds now stand together, common trade, the law of Moses, and a word of the Lord himself.

1 Corinthians 9:15-16

But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void: Paul's refusal is not modesty but a fixed resolve, and he will not let this letter be read as a hint for support now that the case has been made. For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!: preaching itself brings him no boast, since it answers a compulsion laid on him at his calling on the Damascus road, and the woe echoes the prophets sent under constraint. The bench reads glorying void as Paul guarding the one thing he does count a genuine ground for boasting, preaching the gospel at his own charge.

1 Corinthians 9:17-18

For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me: Paul distinguishes a steward acting freely from one simply carrying out a trust, and either way the stewardship itself stands, oikonomia, the same word used of household management. What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel: his reward, paradoxically, is the very renunciation the chapter has been defending his right to make, preaching free of charge becoming itself the crown he seeks. The bench notes the deliberate reversal, a right proven at length only to be handed back as an offering.

1 Corinthians 9:19-20

For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more: the freedom of verse 1 becomes the ground of a voluntary servitude, Paul's rights surrendered by his own choice for the sake of winning others. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law: Acts records him keeping Jewish custom, circumcising Timothy, and taking a vow, all consistent with meeting Jewish hearers on their own ground without compromising the gospel he preached. The principle governs 8:13's promise to eat no meat rather than offend a brother, the same self-emptying pattern applied across every audience Paul reaches.

1 Corinthians 9:21-22

To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law: Paul guards the point carefully, his flexibility with Gentiles outside the Mosaic law never meant lawlessness toward God, since he stands under Christ's own law of love. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some: the weak here recalls the weaker brother of 8:9-13, and the summary line states Paul's whole missionary method, adaptation of manner for the sake of the gospel's substance, never the reverse. The bench notes this is not inconsistency but a settled strategy, the same gospel offered in as many forms as there are hearers to reach.

1 Corinthians 9:23

And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you: Paul's motive for every adaptation just listed is named plainly, the gospel itself, and he counts himself a fellow sharer in it with the very church he is correcting. The bench hears an echo forward into verse 27's fear of becoming a castaway, the partaking Paul seeks for himself as much as for those he wins. The verse closes the missionary argument and turns the chapter toward the discipline such a calling demands.

1 Corinthians 9:24-25

Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize?: run, that ye may obtain presses the runner's single-minded aim onto the Christian life, drawn from the Isthmian Games Corinth hosted and the church knew firsthand. Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things, training for a corruptible crown that perished within days, while the believer runs for an incorruptible one. The bench reads the argument from the lesser to the greater, how much more discipline so great a prize deserves, tying the temperance named here to the whole chapter's theme of surrendered rights.

1 Corinthians 9:26-27

I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: Paul adds boxing to running, and beateth the air pictures a fighter whose blows never land, wasted effort without a real target. I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway: keep under is hypopiazo, to strike under the eye, the boxer's own term, turned on Paul's self-discipline rather than his opponent. Castaway, adokimos, is the word for metal that fails the assayer's test, disqualification from the race just run, and the bench reads the verse as the apostle who has argued his rights at length ending on the discipline that surrendered them.
