1 Corinthians 4:1-2

Paul redefines the party question of chapter 1 by naming himself and Apollos not leaders to be ranked but ministers, hyperetai, literally under-rowers, and stewards, oikonomoi, entrusted with another man's household goods. A steward's whole worth lies in one quality only, that he be found faithful, so the Corinthians' habit of grading teachers by eloquence or following asks the wrong question entirely. The bench reads verse 2 as the standard by which every teacher, ancient or modern, is finally measured, not gifting but trust kept.

1 Corinthians 4:3-4

Paul counts the Corinthians' court of opinion, and even his own self-judgment, a very small thing beside the verdict that actually matters. I judge not mine own self does not claim a clean conscience wrongly, for he immediately adds that a clear conscience does not itself justify him; only the Lord who judges him carries final authority. The commentators note the freedom this buys a servant of Christ, released from living for either the crowd's applause or his own self-approval.

1 Corinthians 4:5

The command follows directly from verse 4, since if Paul will not even judge himself before the Lord's day, the Corinthians have far less standing to pronounce sentence on him now. The Lord's coming will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and make manifest the counsels of the hearts, so that praise, not merely exposure, is what verdict day actually delivers to the faithful steward. The bench reads this as a corrective to premature judgment generally, not a ban on all discernment, since Paul himself judges plainly by chapter 5.

1 Corinthians 4:6

Paul says he has transferred the argument to himself and Apollos, using their names as a figure so the Corinthians might learn the lesson without the sting of naming their actual favorites. Not to think of men above that which is written sets Scripture itself as the boundary teachers must not be exalted past, and puffed up, physioo, names the party spirit's real disease, pride dressed as loyalty. 1 Corinthians 4:7

Three questions in a row dismantle the boasting at its root, since whatever distinguishes one Corinthian teacher's follower from another was received, not achieved. Now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it exposes pride as simple amnesia, forgetting the giver behind the gift. The commentators treat verse 7 as the letter's clearest single statement against human merit in spiritual things.

1 Corinthians 4:8-9

Paul turns to irony, the Corinthians already feasting, already rich, already reigning as kings while the apostles who brought them the gospel are set forth last, appointed to death, and made a spectacle to the world, angels, and men. I would to God ye did reign is not flattery but grief, since the church's premature sense of arrival has left it blind to the apostles' actual suffering on their behalf. The bench notes the gladiatorial image behind spectacle, the apostles like men condemned in the arena while the church watches from comfortable seats.

1 Corinthians 4:10

The contrasts run in threes, fools against wise, weak against strong, despised against honourable, each pair placing the apostles on the losing side of Corinth's own scorecard and the church itself on the winning side by its own reckoning. The bench reads the verse as sustained irony continuing from verse 8, not literal praise of the Corinthians' wisdom, since chapter 1 has already called their wisdom into question at its root. 1 Corinthians 4:11-13

The catalogue of hardship, hunger, thirst, nakedness, buffeting, and homelessness, along with labor with his own hands, answers the Corinthians' comfortable boasting with the apostles' actual daily condition. Being reviled, we bless names the specific discipline Paul practices, returning blessing for curse rather than matching insult for insult, and being defamed, we intreat carries the same pattern into speech under slander. The filth of the world and offscouring of all things, perikatharma and peripsema, were the Greek terms for society's lowest refuse, scapegoats and sweepings, and Paul claims the title for the apostles without complaint.

1 Corinthians 4:14-15

Paul softens the irony's edge, insisting he writes to warn as a father, not to shame, and draws the distinction that will govern the rest of the chapter, instructors, paidagogoi, being many while fathers are few. A paidagogos was a household guide who walked a boy to school without begetting him, and Paul's claim rests on the gospel itself, for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel, a spiritual fatherhood no later teacher can duplicate. The bench reads this as the ground for the appeal that follows, be ye followers of me, since a father's example carries a weight a hired instructor's does not.

1 Corinthians 4:16-17

The appeal to imitation is not vanity but the natural request of the father just named in verse 15, and Paul immediately backs it with a living example, sending Timothy to remind the church of his ways in Christ, the same teaching he gives everywhere in every church. 1 Corinthians 4:18-19

His stated intent when he arrives is not to weigh their speech but their power, dynamis, since eloquence unaccompanied by God's working is exactly the inflation the whole chapter has been diagnosing. The bench reads if the Lord will as Paul's habitual qualifier for travel plans, the same phrase 16:7 and James 4:15 will use.

1 Corinthians 4:20-21

Verse 20 states the standard by which Paul will judge the puffed up teachers when he arrives, since the kingdom of God is demonstrated in power, not merely argued in word. The closing question offers the church a real choice in how that visit goes, a rod of discipline or a spirit of love and meekness, and the choice is theirs to make by how they respond before he comes.
