No other list in the book gives the tribes in this order. Clarke reads it as the order in which the tribes settled, from Judah in the south to Naphtali in the north.

a leader from the tribe of Dan
From Dan onward each man is called a leader of his tribe, a title the first three names lack. Dan is fourth in Adam Clarke's order. Its lot at Joshua 19:40-47 was later lost, and the Danites took Leshem in the north and renamed it Dan.
