Verse 13 gives the land to "the nine and a half tribes", since Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh took pasture across the Jordan. Joshua 22:24-25 records their fear that, with the Jordan a border, their children would hear "You have no share in the LORD".

The grant of chapter 32 still hung on a condition, yet the verse counts it received. John Gill explains that it was agreed they should have it once they crossed and helped conquer Canaan. Their land lies outside this lot.
