Commentary on Jeremiah · Written before 420.

(Verse 13) I will gather them together, says the Lord. There are no grapes on the vines, and there are no figs on the fig tree; the leaf has fallen off, and I have given them what has passed by. The time of visitation, in which the transgressors will fall, is more clearly shown, saying: I will gather them together. Without a doubt, in Jerusalem, so that they will be besieged by the Chaldeans for a long time, and endure the evils of famine.

I will surely consume them announces a harvest failure as judgment's own picture, no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, the leaf fading before its season, ordinary agricultural language carrying the covenant curses of Deuteronomy 28. The people's own voice answers at verse 14, why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, a call to retreat behind walls that will not hold, water of gall given to drink because we have sinned against the Lord naming the cause the crowd itself supplies.

It is expounded in the last clause: The things that I have given them shall pass away from them. Note, God's gifts are upon condition, and revocable upon non-performance of the condition. Mercies abused are forfeited, and it is just with God to take the forfeiture.

Or, “I will gather and sweep them away, saith Jehovah: there are no grapes on the vine, and no figs on the fig-tree, and the leaf is dry: therefore will I appoint those that shall pass over them.” Judah is a vine which bears no fruit: a tree which makes even no profession of life, for her leaf is dry. Many explain the last words of an army sweeping over the land like a flood.
