Little more is recorded than their names, because the history of those that were out of the church (though perhaps it might have been serviceable in politics) would have been of little use in divinity. It is in the church that the memorable instances are found of special grace, and special providence; for that is the enclosure, the rest is common.

Each king reigns in the place of the one who died, and the son of a king never follows him. Hadad is the only king whose wife is named, Mehetabel daughter of Matred. Gill places Rehoboth near the Euphrates with the Targum and inside Edom with Jerome.

1 Chronicles 1:50 to 51 gives the city as Pai and records that Hadad died. Genesis stops with Hadad reigning, and some take it that he was king when the list was written. Mehetabel means God does good.
