on Ezra 7:1-5
Many years later marks a silence of roughly six decades. Ezra's pedigree runs to Aaron the chief priest, and John Wesley notes that several generations are omitted. Ezra 2:62 has already put priests without a recorded genealogy out of the priesthood, so this scribe's credentials stand before he speaks.

Between Meraioth and this Azariah, 1 Chronicles 6:7 to 10 names six generations that Ezra's list passes over: Amariah, Ahitub, Zadok, Ahimaaz, Azariah and Johanan. Albert Barnes calls Ezra's genealogy incomplete, and the gap falls here. The Azariah of this verse matches the one who served in Solomon's temple.
