during the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia

on Ezra 7:1-5

Many years later marks a silence of roughly six decades. Ezra's pedigree runs to Aaron the chief priest, and John Wesley notes that several generations are omitted. Ezra 2:62 has already put priests without a recorded genealogy out of the priesthood, so this scribe's credentials stand before he speaks.

Shallum, Zadok and Ahitub stand in the order of 1 Chronicles 6:12 to 13, where Ahitub fathers Zadok, Zadok fathers Shallum, and Shallum fathers Hilkiah. That list carries two pairs named Ahitub and Zadok, the first at 6:8. This Zadok is the later one.
