You are also to make an altar of acacia wood for the burning of incense

on Exodus 30:1-5

The gold altar is described here, after the priests are consecrated in chapter 29, and away from the table and lampstand. It has horns like the bronze altar of 27:2 and poles like the ark of 25:13, so the altar of prayer travels with the camp.

The measure of the altar of incense in Ezekiel's temple is double to what it is here ( Ezek. xli. 22 ), and it is there called an altar of wood, and there is no mention of gold, to signify that the incense, in gospel times, should be spiritual, the worship plain, and the service of God enlarged, for in every place incense should be offered, Mal. i.

This splendor was adapted to the early age of the church, but in later times, when the worship was to be more spiritual, the altar of incense is prophetically described as not of gold but of wood, and double the size of that in the tabernacle, because the church should be vastly extended (Mal 1:11).
