The people bring much more than enough

on Exodus 36:5-7

Israel gives so much that the work has to be stopped, and a proclamation goes through the camp telling man and woman alike to bring no more. Scripture records no second occasion where an offering is halted for excess. Four chapters earlier this same congregation handed its gold to Aaron and got a calf, and the book sets the two collections that close together and says nothing about the distance.

Matthew Henry notes that Moses could have let the people keep bringing offerings and kept what was more than enough, and he restrained them instead. Adam Clarke says Moses sought no gain in the matter. The order went to man and woman alike.

Had Moses aimed to enrich himself, he might have suffered them still to bring in their offerings; and when the work was finished might have taken the remainder to himself: but he also preferred the public before his own private interest, and was therein a good example to all in public trusts.
