Verse 2 adds “cast images of the Baals”. Verse 3 has him sacrifice “his sons in the fire”, plural, in the Valley of Hinnom, where 2 Kings 16:3 names one son. Chronicles builds its catalogue past the Kings account, naming the valley Josiah will later defile in 2 Kings 23:10.

To walk in the ways of the kings of Israel is to follow the worship Jeroboam set up. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown see Ahaz moving from that pattern to the idolatry of Canaan. Barnes takes the plural Baals as images of the forms under which the Phoenician god was worshiped.

This prince, discarding the principles and example of his excellent father, early betrayed a strong bias to idolatry. He ruled with an arbitrary and absolute authority, and not as a theocratic sovereign: he not only forsook the temple of God, but embraced first the symbolic worship established in the sister kingdom, and afterwards the gross idolatry practised by the Canaanites.
