on 2 Chronicles 28:16-18
Ahaz answers his losses by sending to the king of Assyria, the appeal 2 Kings 16:7 records with his pledge. Chronicles leaves out that pledge and widens the picture of the collapse. The Philistines take cities of the foothills and the Negev, a raid list Kings does not carry.

Gill links this raid to the weakness of Ahaz's position and sees it as one reason he sent to Assyria. Barnes suggests Edom may have acted in league with Rezin. He adds that the prophets rebuke Edom for turning on Judah, as at Amos 1:11 and Obadiah 10-14.

The Edomites took advantage of the reverses of Ahaz, and were perhaps in league with Rezin (see 2Ki 16:6 note). The pitilessness of Edom, and her readiness to turn against Judah in any severe distress, is noticed and sternly rebuked by the prophets (Amo 1:11; Eze 35:5; Oba 1:10-14, etc.).
