a prophet of the LORD named Oded
on 2 Chronicles 28:9-11
A prophet named Oded meets the army before it reaches Samaria, one of the prophets Chronicles alone records, as with Shemaiah in chapter 11. He names the slaughter as sin, done “in a rage that reaches up to heaven”. Spurgeon preached on this passage in his sermon A Home Question.

Oded closes with a command and a warning. Gill takes the order to cover all two hundred thousand of verse 8, women and children included. Matthew Henry reads the warning as a door left open, since mercy to the captives was the one way Israel had to escape that anger.

He protested earnestly against adding this great offense of unnatural and sinful cruelty (Le 25:43, 44; Mic 2:8, 9) to the already overwhelming amount of their own national sins. Such was the effect of his spirited remonstrance and the opposing tide of popular feeling, that "the armed men left the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation."
