Saul sits under a tree in Gibeah with his spear in hand, the mark by which his servants know where the king has made camp. He appeals to his own tribe by name, asking whether the son of Jesse will give them fields and vineyards as he has, and accuses the whole court of conspiring against him though no such league was ever made. Henry calls the charge doubly false, since whatever covenant stood between David and Jonathan carried Saul no harm at all.

Saul's court is his own tribe. Barnes sees in this how isolated the tribes still were, and Wesley hears the fear that a man of Judah would carry the kingdom away from Benjamin. The fields and vineyards recall Samuel's warning at 8:14 that a king would take them for his servants.

That his son Jonathan stirred him up to do so, and was confederate with him in compassing and imagining the death of the king. This also was notoriously false. A league of friendship there was between David and Jonathan, but no conspiracy in any evil thing; none of the articles of their covenant carried any mischief to Saul.
Ye Benjamites - You that are of my own tribe and kindred, from whom David designs to translate the kingdom to another tribe. Will he distribute profits and preferments among you Benjamites, as I have done?
