The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel
on 1 Chronicles 5:3-10
Reuben's line runs to Beerah, whom Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria carried into exile. One clause sits between the names: During the days of Saul they waged war against the Hagrites. Wesley and Barnes note gaps in the line, which cannot span the centuries from Saul to Tiglath-pileser as written.

Beerah held the tribe's leadership at the time of the deportation. Verse 17 dates the genealogies to the reigns of Jotham and Jeroboam, so the Chronicler draws on tribal registers of the eighth century before Christ.
