Psalm 30

Psalms 30:1-3

The Hebrew title reads A Psalm and Song at the dedication of the house of David, which this page's text does not show; the older writers read the house as David's own palace or, by a later tradition tied to the psalm's use at Hanukkah, the temple site itself, and the occasion is named without settling which. The psalm opens on rescue already accomplished, lifted up, not made a laughing-stock to his foes, healed, brought up from the grave. Kept alive, that I should not go down to the pit states the danger plainly: this is a psalm for a man who was near death and is not now.

Psalms 30:4-5

The call widens from the sufferer's own thanks to the whole congregation of his saints, give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness, his character rather than the bare fact of the rescue made the reason to sing. His anger endureth but a moment, in his favour is life sets the two side by side without pretending the anger is unreal, and weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning has become the psalm's best known line for exactly that reason, a real night followed by a real morning rather than a denial that the night happened.

Psalms 30:6-7

In my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved names the presumption plainly, security mistaken for a permanent state rather than a gift held from moment to moment. By thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong credits the strength honestly to God even while confessing the wrong conclusion drawn from it, and thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled shows how quickly the confidence collapsed once the favour seemed to withdraw.

Psalms 30:8-10

The trouble drives the sufferer back to prayer, I cried to thee, O Lord, and unto the Lord I made supplication, the same movement the psalm has already named in verse 2. The argument of verses 9 and 10 is the argument Hezekiah later makes on his own sickbed, what profit is there in my blood, shall the dust praise thee, the living voice being the one thing death removes from God's own praise. Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me, Lord, be thou my helper closes the plea on the plainest words the psalm has.

Psalms 30:11-12

The answer is given in the same reversal language the psalm has built toward since verse 5, mourning into dancing, sackcloth put off, gladness put on in its place. The purpose clause that follows, to the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent, makes plain that the deliverance was never only for the sufferer's own relief; the last line, I will give thanks unto thee for ever, answers the psalm's opening word and closes the circle it opened on.
