Psalm 27

Psalms 27:1-3

The Lord is my light and my salvation: Three images gather in one verse: light, salvation, and the strength of David's life, each grounding the rhetorical question that follows, whom shall I fear. The enemies of verse 2 come to eat up my flesh, predatory language, yet they stumble and fall before David lifts a hand against them. Verse 3 pushes the confidence to its extreme case, an encamped host and a rising war, and answers both with the same claim: the heart will not fear.

Psalms 27:4

Against many wants, David narrows to one thing, and the three verbs that follow describe it: to dwell, to behold, and to enquire, presence, contemplation and instruction held together rather than any one alone. To behold the beauty of the Lord is worship as delight rather than duty, an aim distinct from mere attendance at the sanctuary. The word rendered temple here reaches beyond the tent David actually worshiped in, language the commentators read as reaching toward the house he longed to build rather than describing a building that yet stood.

Psalms 27:5-6

Pavilion and tabernacle stand as parallel words for the same shelter, the tent where David has already said he wishes to dwell, now pictured as a hiding place in the day of trouble. Set upon a rock repeats the psalm's opening confidence in a new image, height and firmness where the enemies of verse 2 expected a fall. The response to shelter is not quiet relief but sacrifice offered with joy and a voice raised in singing, gratitude turned outward rather than kept private.

Psalms 27:7-10

The tone shifts here from settled confidence to urgent petition, a change some readers take as evidence of two psalms joined into one, while others, including the older commentators, read it as one voice moving naturally from praise to need within a single prayer. Verse 8 turns an invitation into an answer: God's own word, Seek ye my face, is met at once by David's heart saying the same words back. Verse 10 reaches its extreme case as verse 3 did, imagining the loss of father and mother, and answers it with the Lord's own taking up of the one left behind.

Psalms 27:11-12

The prayer for guidance asks for a plain path, a road without the obstacles enemies would set, fitting the false witnesses and breathed-out cruelty named in verse 12. Teaching and leading are requested together, instruction that does not merely inform but walks the road with him. The false witnesses recall the kind of court David faced more than once in his life, though no title fixes this psalm to a single occasion.

Psalms 27:13-14

David confesses how close despair came, held back only by faith to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living, this present life rather than a hope deferred to the world to come. The final verse closes with a double command to wait, repeated for weight, addressed as much to David's own soul as to any reader who takes up the psalm after him. Be of good courage joins waiting to strength, the same pairing given to Joshua at the start of his own conquest.
