Matthew 23:1-3

The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat names an actual furnished chair, a stone seat found in several ancient synagogues including Chorazin, from which the reader of the law taught with recognized authority. He that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon carries the logic to its final point, every oath ultimately reaching God himself whether the swearer intends it or not. Matthew 23:23-24

Matthew 23:27-28

The sixth woe pictures whited sepulchres, a practice reported in Jewish sources of whitewashing tombs each spring so that pilgrims arriving for Passover would see them plainly and avoid the corpse defilement that contact with a grave conveyed, a mark meant to protect the traveler rather than to beautify the dead. Matthew 23:29-31

The seventh and last woe finds the scribes and Pharisees building the tombs of the prophets and garnishing the sepulchres of the righteous, honoring in stone the very men their own fathers killed, and saying, if we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets turns their own claim of innocence into a confession, since calling the murdered men prophets and righteous while disowning any share in the guilt still names them as sons of the killers by lineage and, Jesus will say, by imitation. Matthew 23:32-33

Matthew 23:34-36

Matthew 23:37-39

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets breaks from indictment into lament, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not, a longing repeatedly offered and repeatedly refused rather than a door shut from God's side. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate names the temple's coming abandonment, and the bench reads this alongside the wider anti-supersessionism ruling this book keeps throughout, the judgment falling on that generation and that house rather than a final word against Israel as a people forever.
