John 9:1-3

A man blind from his birth prompts the disciples' theology quiz, who did sin, this man, or his parents, the assumption that suffering must map to somebody's guilt being common coin in that day, with prenatal sin a live rabbinic speculation. Jesus refuses both options: Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him, the man's darkness about to become a theater of light. The bench is careful with the clause, which does not deny the men were sinners nor make God the author of the blindness for sport, but relocates the question from cause to purpose; the exposition notes that Jesus sees a man where the disciples see a case.

John 9:4-5

while it is day: I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work: the urgency is the Lord's own, his working span measured against a coming night, and the commentators apply it to every servant's numbered daylight without flattening its first reference to the passion drawing on. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world repeats the great saying of 8:12 at the threshold of the sign that will enact it, and the bench notes the method of this Gospel, claim then demonstration, the light of the world about to be proven on eyes that have never worked.

John 9:6-7

He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and anointed the eyes: the method is startling and the bench declines to explain it away, noting only its resonances, the God who formed man of the dust of the ground handling clay again, and the deliberate making of clay being precisely the kneading the sabbath rules forbade, a provocation verse 14 will confirm was noticed. Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, and John interrupts his own sentence to translate, which is by interpretation, Sent: the man sent to wash in the pool called Sent by the one the chapter calls him that sent me. He went, washed, and came seeing, the obedience as bare as the grammar, and the seeing arriving on the far side of it.

John 9:8-12

Is not this he that sat and begged, the neighbours ask, and some argue he only resembles himself, the change being that great; his answer is the simple insistence, I am he. Asked how, he gives the account he will repeat all chapter in shrinking and hardening form: a man that is called Jesus made clay, anointed mine eyes, said go and wash, and I went and washed, and I received sight. Asked where the healer is, he says I know not, and the bench notes his theology at this stage is almost nothing, a name and an obedience, the chapter being among other things a study in how little a true witness needs to know to be unbreakable.

John 9:13-17

They brought to the Pharisees: They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind, and John now discloses the charge, it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, the kneading and the anointing both on the forbidden lists of sabbath labor as the tradition counted them. The tribunal splits on its own premise: this man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath, against, how can a man that is a sinner do such miracles, and there was a division among them, the sign refusing to fit their categories. Asked his own verdict, the beggar promotes his healer a rank, He is a prophet, and the exposition tracks the ascent across the chapter, a man called Jesus, a prophet, of God, Lord, I believe.

John 9:18-23

The Jews did not believe he had been blind until they called the parents, and here as through the chapter the phrase means the Judean leadership conducting the inquiry, not the people, the healed man and his parents being Jews themselves. The parents certify the two facts no one else could, this is our son, and he was born blind, and then flee the third question, he is of age, ask him, because, John explains, the leadership had agreed already that confessing Jesus as Christ meant being put out of the synagogue, aposynagogos, excommunication with its social ruin. The bench notes the verse's quiet indictment of fear alongside its evidential value: the hostile court itself established the miracle's baseline, a congenital blindness beyond dispute.

John 9:24-25

Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner: the formula is an oath to tell the truth, Joshua's words to Achan, here bent into pressure to recant, the verdict announced before the testimony. The beggar's answer has become one of the church's treasures: Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. The bench holds it up as the irreducible apologetic of experience, refusing the speculative question, standing immovable on the fact, and generations of testimony have borrowed its form because nothing in it can be cross-examined away.

John 9:26-29

What did he to thee, they ask again, hoping repetition will crack the account, and the beggar's patience ends in the chapter's boldest stroke of wit: I have told you already, and ye did not hear, will ye also be his disciples? Then they reviled him, and the revilement draws the era's real line, thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples, we know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is. The exposition lets 5:46 answer them from earlier in the Gospel, had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me, and notes the irony that not knowing whence he is has been, since chapter 7, exactly the crowd's argument both for and against him.

John 9:30-34

Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes: the beggar now argues, and argues well, building a syllogism from the theology everyone in the room shares, God heareth not sinners but the worshipper who doeth his will, and no one since the world began has opened eyes born blind, therefore, if this man were not of God, he could do nothing. The court answers the argument with a sentence about his birth, thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us, resurrecting the very theory of verse 2 that the healing had refuted, and they cast him out. The bench notes who has taught whom: the untrained witness has out-reasoned the tribunal, and excommunication is what remains when the argument is lost.

John 9:35-38

Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him: the seeking is the Lord's, the man expelled from the synagogue found by the one the synagogue expelled him for, and the bench treasures the order of it, cast out and then found. Dost thou believe on the Son of God, Jesus asks, and the man's who is he, Lord, that I might believe is answered with the rarest directness in the Gospel, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee, the verb of sight chosen for eyes that were opened that morning. Lord, I believe, and he worshipped him: the chapter's ascent completes, a man called Jesus, a prophet, of God, and now worship, which Jesus receives, the bench noting that no mere creature in Scripture rightly accepts it.

John 9:39-41

For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind: the saying gathers the chapter into a sentence, the beggar and the tribunal exchanging places, and the exposition holds it beside 3:17, sent not to condemn, for the judgment here is the sorting that light performs simply by shining. Some Pharisees ask, are we blind also, and the answer turns on the claim to sight: if ye were blind, ye should have no sin, ignorance would have excuse, but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. The bench reads the last clause as the chapter's warning to every confident eye: the one incurable blindness is the certainty that one already sees, and the man born blind saw first.
