John 21:1-2

After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias, the Gospel's own name for Galilee's lake, and the roll call names seven, Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana, the sons of Zebedee left unnamed by their own names for the only time in this Gospel, and two others. The bench notes the deliberate return to Galilee that the angel and the Lord himself had already commanded (Matt 28:7, 10), the disciples obeying before this third appearance finds them. Nathanael's presence closes a small circle from chapter 1, the man under the fig tree now standing by the same sea where the first sign was worked at Cana's wedding not far off.

John 21:3

Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing, and the others follow him back to the nets: the bench divides gently on the tone, some reading a lawful return to an honest trade between appearances with nothing wrong in it, others hearing the drift of a man not yet certain what discipleship now means after his denial. That night they caught nothing answers Luke 5:5 on purpose, the same fruitless night that opened Peter's call now closing it, framing the chapter's miracle as the Lord repeating the sign that first made him a fisher of men.

John 21:4-6

But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore, unrecognized just as he was at the tomb by Mary, and the disciples knew not that it was Jesus, the same veiling that has marked each resurrection appearance until the Lord chooses to be known. Children, the address paidia carrying an affection distinct from the sheep language just ahead, have ye any meat draws the plain answer, No, and Cast the net on the right side of the ship repeats in substance, if not in words, the command that once filled Peter's boat at his first call (Luke 5:4-6), the catch again too great to draw.

John 21:7

It is the Lord: That disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord: the beloved disciple's spiritual perception again outruns Peter's, as at the empty tomb, recognizing the Lord by the sign's exact echo of the first catch. Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, for he was naked, and did cast himself into the sea, the impulsive love of the earlier Peter breaking out again, reverence covering him before it carries him overboard toward his Lord rather than waiting for the boat.

John 21:8-9

The other disciples came in a little ship, for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits, dragging the net with fishes, John's own eyewitness care fixing the exact distance from shore. As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread, a provision already made before their labor arrived, and the bench notes anthrakia, a fire of coals, is the exact word used only once before in this Gospel, the fire Peter warmed himself at in the high priest's courtyard the night he denied his Lord (18:18), the same word placing Peter's restoration beside a fire like the one that had witnessed his fall.

John 21:10-11

Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught, joining their own labor to his provision rather than replacing it, the fish already on the coals not excluding what the net had drawn. Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three, and the bench states honestly that the church has read the number many ways, some finding a plain eyewitness count with nothing further meant, others from ancient commentators onward finding in it a picture of the gospel's reach to every kind of nation, no reading pressed as certain. Yet was not the net broken answers Luke 5:6 by contrast, where the nets there began to break, the greater catch here held whole.

John 21:12-14

Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine, the Lord himself as host and provider at his own resurrection table, and none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou, knowing that it was the Lord, their certainty now too settled to need the question verse 7 had already answered for them. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise, the same giving hands that broke bread for the five thousand and were known in the breaking at Emmaus. John counts for his reader, this is now the third time Jesus shewed himself to his disciples corporately after his resurrection, the evangelist's own careful numbering guarding the record's accuracy.

John 21:15

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these, the old name used rather than the new one Peter received at his call, and the bench names the standing question over these without settling it, whether the boats and the fishing trade Peter has just returned to, or the other disciples whose love he had once boasted above (Matt 26:33), both readings holding the sense that Peter's confidence needs correcting more than his affection. He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee, using phileo, not the agapao of the question, answered, Feed my lambs, the first of three commissions restoring the shepherd's office to the man who three times denied the shepherd.

John 21:16

He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me, the question repeated without more than these, as though Peter's answer had already settled that comparison. Peter answers again with phileo, thou knowest that I love thee, and receives Feed my sheep, a wider word than lambs, poimaine rather than boske in the Greek behind it, tending as well as feeding, the pastoral charge deepening with each round.

John 21:17

He saith unto him the third time, Lovest thou me, and this time Jesus asks with Peter's own word, phileo, not agapao, the third question matching Peter's answer rather than raising the bar again, and Peter was grieved, the third question landing exactly on the three denials it heals. The bench holds both readings of the agapao and phileo alternation honestly rather than choosing between them: some find a real distinction, Jesus lowering his question to meet a chastened Peter who no longer dares claim the higher love, others read John's known habit of varying synonyms without doctrinal freight, agapao and phileo used interchangeably elsewhere in this Gospel for the Father's own love of the Son (5:20, 3:35). Lord, thou knowest all things, thou knowest that I love thee appeals past Peter's own word to the Lord's omniscience, and Feed my sheep completes the threefold restoration answering the threefold denial by the fire.

John 21:18-19

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, one of the Gospel's doubled amens closing the book much as the prologue opened with its own solemnities, and the saying contrasts young self-direction, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest, When thou wast young against an old age when another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. John explains the saying himself, signifying by what death he should glorify God, tying Peter's coming end to the same word the cross itself earned (12:23, 13:31), and church tradition from the second century holds that Peter was crucified, some naming the manner as head downward at his own request, a tradition and not a text. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me, the very words of Peter's first call (Matt 4:19) renewing the charge after the restoration is complete.

John 21:20-23

Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following, identified again by the supper scene, which also leaned on his breast at supper, and Peter, freshly told his own death, asks of another man's future, Lord, and what shall this man do. Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee, follow thou me, a plain rebuke of comparison rather than a promise, each disciple's path set by the Lord alone and no one's call measured against another's. John corrects the rumor his own generation drew from the saying, that that disciple should not die, stating carefully what Jesus actually said, a conditional never resolved into a promise, and the correction reads as the aged apostle's own witness against a report already circulating before he wrote.

John 21:24-25

This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things, the beloved disciple identifying himself as the Gospel's own author and eyewitness, and we know that his testimony is true closes the book's long witness structure (5:31-47 among others) with a communal attestation, likely the elders of the church he served adding their seal to the apostle's record. And there are also many other things which Jesus did stands beside John's own purpose statement at 20:30-31, the deeds too many for any book, and the closing hyperbole, the world itself could not contain the books that should be written, the bench reads as deliberate overstatement in the manner common to ancient rhetoric, not a claim to be taken with wooden literalism, but a fitting close to a life its own witnesses found too great for their pages.
