The indictment opens with a memory of courtship: 'I remember for thee the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals; how thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown' (2:2). Then the charge that defines the book: 'My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water' (2:13). Israel is a degenerate vine, a wild ass in her heat, a nation saying to a stock, Thou art my father. And owning as many gods as she has cities.
