Isaiah 47:1-4

Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon: Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, strips the empire of both seat and title in one breath, the virgin figure marking a city that had never been taken now ordered into a slave's labor, take the millstones, and grind meal. The bench reads the uncovered thigh and the rivers passed over as the humiliation of exile itself, a queen reduced to the field hand's exposure and the captive's march. Into the taunt the prophet interjects the chapter's counterweight, as for our redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel, the title the book carries through both its halves. The redeemer's name stands deliberately inside Babylon's fall, the same God who judges the empire and ransoms his people.

Isaiah 47:5-7

Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness: Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans, strips the second title Babylon claimed for herself, the lady of kingdoms. The charge against her is specific rather than a general cruelty, thou didst shew them no mercy, upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke, naming Babylon's severity toward the exiles God had handed her in judgment as the very sin that now draws judgment on Babylon itself. Henry and Gill both note the irony of an instrument of wrath punished for exceeding its commission, wroth with my people answered by no mercy shown. The lady who said, I shall be a lady for ever, is charged with never laying the latter end to heart, a presumption the chapter now answers verse by verse.

Isaiah 47:8-11

Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures: Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, answers Babylon's presumed security with the trial's own vocabulary, I am, and none else beside me repeated at verse 8 and again at verse 10, the very claim the Lord makes of himself in the surrounding chapters now placed in a pagan city's mouth. The two things, loss of children and widowhood, are named as coming in a moment, in one day, against a city that had said it would never know either. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee names the sorceries and enchantments of the following verses as the very tools that blinded her to the coming evil. Barnes and Delitzsch both read the doubled I am, and none else beside me as the chapter's deliberate echo, Babylon borrowing the language of deity for herself.

Isaiah 47:12-15

Stand now with thine enchantments: Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth, summons Babylon's own occult resources to the trial, the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators named by their specific offices rather than as a vague catalogue. The bench notes the irony that a city famous across the ancient world for reading the heavens is told to stand up and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee, the very disciplines proving powerless at the moment they are needed. They shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them, closes the astrologers' fate with the same fire that answered the ashes and dust of the opening verses. None shall save thee ends the oracle where it began, a throne with nothing under it and merchants who wander away rather than answer her call.
