Woe opens against the rebellious children who go down to Egypt without asking at Jehovah's mouth (princes at Zoan, ambassadors at Hanes, treasures carried through the South's lions and serpents) for "Egypt helpeth in vain," named "Rahab that sitteth still." The refusal is inscribed on a tablet as a lasting witness against a people demanding smooth things, who hear "in returning and rest shall ye be saved… and ye would not," choose horses, and flee a thousand at the threat of one.

The refusal is inscribed on a tablet as a lasting witness against a people demanding smooth things, who hear "in returning and rest shall ye be saved… and ye would not," choose horses, and flee a thousand at the threat of one. Yet Jehovah waits to be gracious: Zion weeps no more, teachers are no longer hidden, a voice behind says "this is the way," idols are defiled, rain and fat harvests come, and moonlight shines like sunlight when he binds up his people's hurt. The close is theophany: Jehovah's name comes burning, his voice dismays the Assyrian (struck to the sound of tabrets) and Topheth stands prepared for the king.
