Ephesians 4:1-3

I therefore marks the letter's hinge, the indicative of chapters one through three turning to the imperative that fills the rest, and walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called opens the walk thread's central beat after 2:2 and 2:10. Worthy translates axios, a weight matching a scale, the conduct asked to balance the calling just described in three long chapters. Lowliness, meekness, longsuffering and forbearing one another in love name the temper unity requires, and endeavouring renders spoudazo, urgent effort, the unity of the Spirit already given but still needing to be kept in the bond of peace rather than assumed automatic.

Ephesians 4:4-6

There is one body, and one Spirit: Seven ones are named in three verses, one body and one Spirit and one hope answering to the Spirit, one Lord and one faith and one baptism answering to the Son, one God and Father answering to the Father, the whole trinitarian shape of chapter one compressed into a creed-like list. One baptism is read two ways, water baptism as the church's one rite, or the one baptism into the body by the Spirit that 1 Corinthians 12:13 names, and both readings are held among the letter's own interpreters. Above all, and through all, and in you all stacks three prepositions to describe the Father's relation to his creation, transcendent over it, active through it, and present within believers particularly.

Ephesians 4:7

But turns from the sevenfold unity just listed to what makes the one body many-membered, unto every one of us is given grace naming a specific enabling for service rather than saving grace held in common. The measure of the gift of Christ makes Christ himself the one who apportions, each believer receiving a differing amount rather than an identical share. The verse sets up the gift list that follows at verse eleven, individual grace serving the corporate body just described.

Ephesians 4:8-10

He saith quotes Psalm 68:18, a victory psalm for the ark's ascent to Zion, now read of Christ's ascension; the Hebrew text there reads received gifts among men where Paul writes gave gifts unto men, a known difference some read as Paul's own inspired application, the conquering king receiving tribute in order to distribute it to his own people, and others trace to a Jewish reading tradition already reading the verse that way. Descended first into the lower parts of the earth divides commentators along Tier A lines: the fathers and the creed's own line read a descent to Hades between the cross and the resurrection, Calvin reads the descent as the incarnation itself, humiliation rather than a passage after death, and a third reading takes the lower parts as simply the grave. First Peter 3:19 is the passage most often set beside this one, and none of the three readings is pressed to a verdict here.

Ephesians 4:11

He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets names Christ's own continuing provision to his church, given toward the goal of verse thirteen that has not yet arrived, till we all come in the unity of the faith. Pastors and teachers share a single Greek article covering both nouns, which many read as one office named two ways rather than two separate offices, distinct from the apostles, prophets and evangelists listed before them. The gifts are Christ's own gifts to his body and the letter gives no word of their expiring; the exposition follows the site's own standing posture that apostles and prophets continue among Christ's provisions rather than having ceased.

Ephesians 4:12

Perfecting translates katartismos, the same root Galatians 6:1 uses for restoring a fallen brother and Mark 1:19 for mending torn nets, equipping and setting right rather than a single finished completion. The three purposes named, perfecting the saints, the work of the ministry, and edifying the body, are read two ways: either the gifted offices of verse eleven do all three themselves, or they equip the saints for the work of the ministry, so that the saints themselves do the work that edifies the body. The second reading has gathered wide support because it matches the body language of verse sixteen, where every joint supplieth rather than the head alone.

Ephesians 4:13

Till we all come names a corporate destination the church has not yet reached, unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God together rather than uniformity of opinion on every point. A perfect man translates teleios, mature or complete rather than sinless, the same word used of full growth elsewhere in the New Testament. The measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ sets Christ's own fulness as the standard the church grows toward, a goal large enough to explain why the gifts of verse eleven are still given rather than withdrawn.

Ephesians 4:14

No more children pictures the immature state the gifts of verse eleven are given to outgrow, tossed to and fro rendering kludonizomai, the image of a wave driven by wind, and carried about adding periphero, swept along rather than standing. Sleight of men translates a gambler's word for a dice-trick, and cunning craftiness renders methodeia, the same word the letter uses again at 6:11 of the devil's own wiles, so the danger named here is the same kind the armor of chapter six is issued against. They lie in wait to deceive names intention behind the false teaching, a deliberate strategy rather than an honest mistake.

Ephesians 4:15-16

Speaking the truth in love answers the instability of verse fourteen directly, alethuo meaning to deal truly in both word and deed, the verb paired with love as the combination that produces growth rather than division. Grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ names the goal as conformity to Christ, growth measured against him rather than against a human standard. Verse sixteen extends the body into an anatomy lesson, fitly joined together and compacted, every joint supplieth, the whole structure growing by the cooperation of every part rather than by the head's action on passive members alone.

Ephesians 4:17-19

This I say therefore names the fourth beat of the walk thread, after the dead walk of 2:2, the prepared walk of 2:10, and the worthy walk of 4:1, now the walk not as other Gentiles walk. Vanity of their mind translates mataiotes, emptiness or futility, thinking that has lost its true object. The chain in verses eighteen and nineteen runs downward in careful steps, darkened understanding to alienation from the life of God to a hardened heart to being past feeling, apalgeo, calloused beyond the reach of pain, ending in lasciviousness pursued with greediness, pleonexia, a wanting that never reaches enough.

Ephesians 4:20-21

But ye have not so learned Christ sets the sharpest possible contrast to verses seventeen through nineteen, and learned Christ is an unusual phrase, Christ himself as the content learned rather than merely a subject taught about him. As the truth is in Jesus uses the human name Jesus rather than the title Christ, which some read as a deliberate turn toward the historical, incarnate life as the pattern of truth, the same claim John 14:6 makes in Jesus' own words. The two verses together ground the ethical instruction that follows not in a rule but in a person actually known.

Ephesians 4:22-24

Put off, be renewed, and put on form a triad many read against the background of baptismal instruction, stripping off old clothing, washing, and being clothed anew, a picture the early church's own baptismal practice made literal. The old man and the new man are not purely private categories; the same new man language named the one new man of Jew and Gentile at 2:15, so personal renewal and corporate reconciliation share one vocabulary in this letter. Created in righteousness and true holiness makes the new man a fresh act of God's own making rather than a self-improvement project, the same creative word used of the church's workmanship at 2:10.

Ephesians 4:25

Putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour quotes Zechariah 8:16 nearly word for word, a command first given for restored Israel now applied to the restored body of Christ. For we are members one of another grounds the command in the anatomy just described in verses fifteen and sixteen, lying named as an injury the body does to its own joints rather than a private matter between two individuals only. The list of practical commands that fills the rest of the chapter begins here, each one answering to a specific way the body can wound itself.

Ephesians 4:26-27

Be ye angry, and sin not quotes Psalm 4:4, and the command itself concedes that anger is not automatically sinful, only anger that is allowed to sin or to outlast its hour. Let not the sun go down upon your wrath sets a literal daily limit, unresolved anger carried past sunset named as the danger rather than anger itself. Neither give place to the devil calls unresolved anger a topos, a literal foothold or opening, naming a real spiritual danger rather than a figure of speech only.

Ephesians 4:28

Let him that stole steal no more addresses a real converted thief in the congregation directly, the household codes and this list together painting a church still carrying its old members' old habits into new life. But rather let him labour reverses the pattern rather than merely halting it, taking from others turned into working with his own hands. That he may have to give to him that needeth names the purpose of labor as generosity, the same hands that once took now supplying another's lack, a total reversal rather than a simple stop.

Ephesians 4:29

Corrupt communication translates sapros, the word used elsewhere of rotten fruit or decaying fish, speech pictured as something that can spoil. The standard set is not merely harmless but useful, that which is good to the use of edifying, speech measured by whether it builds up the hearer rather than merely by whether it offends. Minister grace unto the hearers names words as a channel of grace to whoever receives them, ordinary conversation carrying real spiritual effect.

Ephesians 4:30

Grieve not the holy Spirit of God addresses the Spirit as a person capable of being wounded by conduct, not an impersonal force or influence; grief is not an emotion an energy can feel. Whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption recalls the sealing already named at 1:13, the same Spirit who marked the believer as God's own now named as one whose presence responds to how that believer lives. The verse sits inside a list of very ordinary sins, lying, unresolved anger, corrupt speech, naming the Spirit's own grief as the deepest reason to lay each one aside.

Ephesians 4:31-32

Bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, evil speaking and malice are named together and put away in one sweep, the same verb used of stripping off the old man at verse twenty-two now applied to its specific fruits. Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another answers each vice with its positive opposite, the chapter refusing to leave a bare list of prohibitions standing alone. Even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you names the standard and the ground together, forgiveness commanded because forgiveness has already been received, the ethics of the whole chapter resting on the doctrine the first three chapters spent laying down.
