Ecclesiastes 9:1

The righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God opens the chapter by placing every person and every deed under a governance that outward events do not reveal. No man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them, the Preacher adds, because what happens to a man in this life is no reliable sign of God's favor or displeasure toward him. Henry and Gill both read this as the hinge into the leveler that follows, providence hidden even while it governs.

Ecclesiastes 9:2-3

There is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked states the leveler at full strength: the same end meets the good man and the sinner, the one who sacrifices and the one who does not, the one who swears an oath and the one who fears to. Verse three names this an evil among all things done under the sun, and adds that the heart of the sons of men is full of evil while they live. Bridges reads the bluntness as the book's honesty rather than its despair, a fact the Preacher records because it is true, not because he approves of it.

Ecclesiastes 9:4

A living dog is better than a dead lion trades on the ancient contempt for dogs and honor for lions to make its point sharper: the least living creature outranks the greatest dead one, because to him that is joined to all the living there is hope. The proverb is not a verdict on death itself but on life's remaining possibility, action and choice still open to the living and closed to the dead. Gill and Clarke both take the image as deliberately shocking, chosen so the reader cannot miss the point.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6

The dead know not any thing is spoken from the same vantage the whole book keeps, what is visible under the sun, and the bench reads it as the Preacher's report from that ground rather than the full and final word Scripture gives about the dead elsewhere. Their love, their hatred, their envy is said to have perished, and they have no more a portion in anything done under the sun, the memory of them forgotten. The verse is neither softened nor overridden here; it states what death removes from a man's part in this present world.

Ecclesiastes 9:7-8

Eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart turns from the leveler to counsel, since God now accepteth thy works, present tense, the ordinary meal received as already approved rather than earned by some further test. White garments and oil for the head follow as marks of festivity in the ancient near east, not to be withheld while a man still lives, as Clarke notes on the imagery. The counsel does not erase what the chapter has just said about death; it tells the living what to do with the life that remains to them.

Ecclesiastes 9:9

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest names marriage as itself a portion given under the sun, set alongside bread and wine as one more good received rather than seized. The days of thy vanity, repeated twice in the verse, keeps the gift inside the book's larger verdict rather than pretending it escapes it. Bridges reads the counsel as domestic rather than merely personal, joy found in the ordinary bond of a household and the labor that sustains it.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might draws its urgency from the grave's silence: there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. The counsel is not despair but its opposite, since the shortness of opportunity is the very reason to act now rather than delay. Henry reads the verse as aimed at diligence in one's calling, work done fully because the window for doing it will close.

Ecclesiastes 9:11

Time and chance happeneth to them all closes a list of expected outcomes denied: the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favour to men of skill. The verse does not deny that skill and strength ordinarily help; it denies that they guarantee the outcome every time, since something outside a man's control can intervene. Gill reads this alongside 8:17 as the same limit stated twice, providence governing results in a way ability alone cannot secure.

Ecclesiastes 9:12

Man also knoweth not his time extends the point of verse eleven from ability to foresight: as fish are taken in an evil net and birds caught in a snare, so are the sons of men snared in an evil time when it falls on them suddenly. The comparison stresses the suddenness rather than the man's fault, an evil time that arrives without warning to creatures that could not have seen it coming. Clarke notes that the net and the snare were the common hunting methods of the Preacher's own day, chosen because they were familiar to every reader.

Ecclesiastes 9:13

This wisdom have I seen also under the sun introduces the chapter's closing illustration, and it seemed great unto me signals that what follows carried real weight for the Preacher himself, not merely another case among many. The verse functions as a heading for the little city that follows, wisdom about to be demonstrated in a single memorable event rather than stated as a maxim. Henry reads the phrasing as deliberate, the Preacher marking this particular observation as worth pausing over.

Ecclesiastes 9:14-16

There was a little city, and few men within it sets the scene for wisdom's clearest demonstration in the chapter: a great king besieges the city and builds bulwarks against it, and a poor wise man is found in it who delivers the city by his wisdom. Yet no man remembered that same poor man, the wisdom that saved the city forgotten as soon as the danger passed. Wisdom is better than strength, the Preacher concludes, but adds without softening it that the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard, the same unfairness chapter eight already named.

Ecclesiastes 9:17-18

The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools answers the poor wise man's neglect with a counter-observation: quiet wisdom, even when overlooked in the moment, outweighs the loud command of a foolish ruler. Wisdom is better than weapons of war closes the chapter's argument for wisdom's worth, yet the last clause refuses a tidy ending: one sinner destroyeth much good, undoing in a moment what wisdom took long to build. Gill reads the final line as a warning that wisdom's advantage is real but never immune to a single act of folly.
