Acts 26:1-3

Thou art permitted to speak for thyself, Agrippa grants, and Paul stretched forth the hand in the orator's own gesture before beginning, Luke again showing a scene he could describe because he had watched it. I think myself happy, king Agrippa, is not flattery for its own sake but a real advantage claimed, since Agrippa the Second, great-grandson of Herod the Great, was raised with a working knowledge of Jewish law and controversy that Festus the Roman lacked entirely. Paul asks only patience, and the bench notes that his opening is disarming rather than defensive, a prisoner setting the terms of his own hearing.

Acts 26:4-5

My manner of life from my youth, Paul says, was lived openly at Jerusalem among his own nation, and the Jews who knew him could testify, if they would, that he lived after the most straitest sect of our religion a Pharisee. The if they would testify is a quiet barb, since the same men who could vouch for his former standing are the accusers now refusing to speak. The bench reads this as the same argument Paul made in Philippians 3, his pedigree stated plainly and then set beside what it cost him to leave it, though here the aim is only to establish the credibility no honest court could deny.

Acts 26:6-8

Now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers, Paul says, relocating the whole trial: this is not apostasy from Judaism but the very hope the twelve tribes serve God day and night to reach. The promise is the resurrection, named outright in the next breath, and Paul turns to Agrippa with the argument's hinge, Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? The bench notes the rhetorical shape, a Jewish king who confesses the God of Israel cannot consistently call the resurrection incredible, so the real controversy is narrowed to a single dead man risen, not to the category of resurrection itself.

Acts 26:9-11

I verily thought with myself that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth, Paul confesses, and the third telling adds detail the earlier two omit, that he gave his voice against the saints when they were put to death, a phrase the bench reads as testimony to a formal vote, likely in the Sanhedrin itself, making Paul a participant in judicial killing and not merely a bystander at Stephen's stoning. Compelled to blaspheme names the pressure he put on believers to curse Christ's name, and exceedingly mad against them describes a zeal the text never softens even as Paul recounts it to a king, the confession serving the larger case that only God could have turned such a man.

Acts 26:12-14

As I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, Paul says, and the third telling fixes the time as at midday, the light above the brightness of the sun ruling out any natural glare the others on the road might have mistaken it for. All fallen to the earth is new to this account, extending the light's effect from Paul alone to the whole company, and the voice speaks in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me, adding the Aramaic proverb it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks, an ox goaded into fighting its own driver, a figure familiar from Greek literature that Paul, addressing a court trained in both worlds, chooses with evident care.

Acts 26:15-16

Who art thou, Lord, Paul asks, and the answer identifies the risen Christ with the church he is dragging to prison, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest, the same identification carried in 9:4 and 22:8 and the ground of the doctrine that Christ suffers in his members. But rise, and stand upon thy feet, the commission follows at once, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee, folding the Damascus vision, the later visions of 18:9 and 23:11, and every future revelation into one standing charge. The bench notes that this telling states the commissioning words at the moment of the vision itself, compressing what Ananias later delivers in the other accounts, since Paul is summarizing for a king rather than narrating in sequence.

Acts 26:17-18

Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, the commission continues, and verse 18 states the mission in five clauses that the bench reads as the fullest single statement of gospel purpose in Paul's speeches: to open their eyes, to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Darkness and Satan's power named together, and light and God named together, set the whole Gentile mission inside a rescue rather than a mere change of religion, and by faith that is in me closes the sentence on the one ground the whole book has argued from the start.

Acts 26:19-21

I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision, Paul says, and the phrase becomes the hinge of his whole defense, obedience to a vision no earthly court can verify except by its fruit. He showed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, the geography matching 1:8's own program read backward from its far end, and the content of the preaching is named plainly, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance, the same call John the Baptist and Jesus both preached. For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me, Paul states without elaboration, the fact of the assault standing on its own beside the innocence of the message that provoked it.

Acts 26:22-23

Having obtained help of God, Paul continues, witnessing both to small and great, and stakes his whole message on continuity rather than novelty, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come. The content is stated in a single compressed creed, that Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles, the suffering Messiah and the resurrection and the Gentile light all claimed as what Moses and the prophets already said. The bench notes Paul's care throughout the speech to make himself the fulfillment of Judaism rather than its rival, precisely the ground the anti-supersessionist reading of the whole book stands on.

Acts 26:24-26

As he thus spake for himself, Festus interrupts with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself, much learning doth make thee mad, a Roman's honest reaction to resurrection talk he cannot follow. Paul's answer is calm and precise, I am not mad, most noble Festus, but speak forth the words of truth and soberness, and he turns at once back to Agrippa, for the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely, appealing to public facts a Jewish ruler of Palestine could check for himself. This thing was not done in a corner is the apologetic center of the whole speech, the crucifixion and its aftermath claimed as public Jerusalem history rather than a private vision, open to verification by anyone willing to ask.

Acts 26:27-29

King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? Paul presses, and answers his own question, I know that thou believest, closing the trap gently rather than harshly. Agrippa's reply, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian, has been read two ways across the bench: some hold it genuine hesitation on the edge of conviction, others a deflecting half-jest turning the personal question aside before witnesses, and both readings are held by serious commentators with neither pronounced certain by the text itself. Paul's answer reaches past the king to everyone present, I would to God that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost and altogether such as I am, except these bonds, wishing his hearers his own faith while owning his chains without complaint.

Acts 26:30-32

The king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them, the hearing ending as such hearings did, in private conference rather than a verdict from the bench, and their conclusion is unanimous, this man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds. Agrippa's last word to Festus carries an irony the whole scene has been building toward, this man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar, Paul's own earlier legal move now the very thing keeping an innocent man in custody. The bench notes that the chapter closes with Rome's own examiners clearing Paul three times over, Felix, Festus and now Agrippa, the record standing before the reader as Paul's ship turns toward the city Christ had promised him at 23:11.
