1 Timothy 5:1-2

Timothy is warned off a young pastor's sharp rebuke and given a family grammar instead: an older man is entreated as a father, not scolded, and every other relation in the church follows the same household pattern, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with all purity guarding that last pairing especially. The verb behind rebuke, epiplesso, names a blow with words, and Paul forbids it toward age while still expecting correction to happen inside the family bond. Ephesus is drawn as one household under Timothy's care, its discipline exercised the way a son honors an elder, not the way a magistrate strikes a stranger.

1 Timothy 5:3-4

Honour widows that are widows indeed opens the roll with its qualifying phrase, since not every widow bears that description in Paul's usage; the word honour carries both respect and support together. Where children or nephews (the KJV's word for grandchildren) survive, the family's own duty comes first, to shew piety at home and requite their parents, repaying the debt of a lifetime's care. That order is called good and acceptable before God, the church's welfare kept from replacing a family's own obligation.

1 Timothy 5:5-6

The widow indeed is drawn in one sentence: desolate of family support, she has turned the loss into constant prayer, trusting in God and continuing in supplications night and day, the pattern Anna keeps at Luke 2:37. Against her stands a widow living in pleasure, spatalao, self-indulgence, of whom Paul says the hardest line in the chapter, dead while she liveth, alive to the body's calendar and dead to the life that counts. The contrast marks the whole roll's standard, need answered by devotion, not comfort chased at the church's expense.

1 Timothy 5:7-8

And these things give in charge restates the letter's paraggelia pattern, the standard handed down so the household may be blameless before Ephesus watches it. Verse 8 turns the widow provision into a general rule of household duty: a man who fails to provide for his own, and specially his own house, has denied the faith in practice though not in creed, and is judged worse than an infidel, since even pagans cared for their kin. The charge protects widows precisely by binding their families first.

1 Timothy 5:9-10

The widow roll, the church's first structured order of care, sets its own bar: not under sixty, the wife of one man, the same fidelity standard set for the overseer at 3:2 and read by the same range of interpreters as single marriage rather than remarriage barred, and well reported of for good works. The list itemizes a life already spent in service, raising children, lodging strangers, washing the saints' feet, the towel work Christ himself modeled at John 13, relieving the afflicted. Enrollment recognizes a record already made rather than creating a new office from nothing.

1 Timothy 5:11-13

Refuse the younger widows carries a practical concern, not a low view of youth: when the desire to remarry outgrows a vow tied to the roll's support, the traditional reading of wax wanton against Christ, broken vows and idle, gadding habits follow, tattlers and busybodies speaking things they ought not. Having damnation and cast off their first faith are read either as a broken pledge to the church's care or as a serious lapse of devotion, both readings held by careful interpreters without agreement on which is meant. Paul's concern is the same one that shapes the whole roll, a structure built to serve rather than to tempt.

1 Timothy 5:14-15

I will therefore counsels remarriage plainly for the younger widows just described, bear children, guide the house, oikodespotein, rule the household, removing the occasion the adversary needs to speak reproachfully of the church. The counsel is pastoral rather than universal, and it corrects any reading of Paul as opposed to marriage itself, a charge his own words elsewhere refute. Verse 15 supplies the real danger behind the counsel: some already turned aside after Satan, a loss the chapter is written to prevent, not merely describe.

1 Timothy 5:16

The verse widens the family duty of verses 3 and 4 to any believer, man or woman, who has widows within reach, so the church's own funds are kept for widows indeed, those with no other support. Let not the church be charged states the same principle in the negative, a congregation's resources conserved for the truly desolate rather than spent where a family could carry the load. The early church's welfare system runs on this division of labor between household and assembly.

1 Timothy 5:17-18

Elders that rule well receive double honour, time, a word covering both respect and the stipend the next clause implies, especially toward those who labour in the word and doctrine, teaching elders singled out for a heavier load. Paul grounds the pay with two proofs, Deuteronomy 25:4's ox not muzzled while it treads the corn, and a saying of the Lord's own, the labourer is worthy of his reward, the same words Jesus gives the seventy at Luke 10:7. The pairing treats a saying of Jesus as Scripture beside Moses, one of the New Testament's own clearest signs of how early it received his words that way.

1 Timothy 5:19-20

An elder's exposure to false or malicious charges is answered with Deuteronomy 19:15's own rule, no accusation received but before two or three witnesses, an elder given the same legal protection Israel's courts owed any defendant. Verse 20 balances the protection with exposure: those who do sin are rebuked before all, publicly, that others also may fear, church discipline neither shielding leaders from correction nor exposing them to gossip. The two verses together fence the office without exempting the man.

1 Timothy 5:21-22

The charge is sworn before the highest court Paul can name, God, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, the unseen host who watch the church's discipline as witnesses, distinguished from the fallen angels reserved for judgment at 2 Peter 2:4. Its content is impartiality, doing nothing by partiality, without preferring one before another, the very fairness verse 19's rule was meant to secure. Lay hands suddenly on no man warns against hasty ordination, since a hand laid too quickly makes the ordainer partaker of other men's sins, and the verse's last word to Timothy personally is keep thyself pure.

1 Timothy 5:23

Use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities answers Timothy's own health rather than laying down a rule for the church, most likely prompted by the water-only asceticism the false teachers were pressing at 4:3. The verse is neither a temperance proof text nor a general license, a personal prescription for a young pastor whose scruple had outrun his stomach. Its placement here, inside the charge on impartial discipline, reads like Paul catching himself mid-letter to add a fatherly aside.

1 Timothy 5:24-25

Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment, while others follow after, surfacing only later, a warning that explains why verse 22's caution with ordination matters, since a candidate's faults are not always visible on the surface. Good works run the same two ways, some manifest at once and some hidden for a time, but Paul insists even the hidden ones cannot stay hid forever. The pair closes the chapter on the note that opened it, character read carefully over time rather than judged at a glance.
