1 Timothy 4:1-2

The doctrine thread turns prophetic here, now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, the Greek behind depart naming a falling away from a position once held rather than mere confusion. 1 Timothy 4:3-5

The false teaching's two marks are named plainly, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, an asceticism imposed as doctrine rather than offered as private discipline, likely combining an early Jewish ascetic strain with Ephesus's own currents. Paul's answer is creation itself, every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving, echoing Genesis 1's repeated verdict that what God made is good. Sanctified by the word of God and prayer names two means by which ordinary food and marriage are set apart for a believer's use, made holy again by his own grateful use of them.

1 Timothy 4:6

Timothy's own charge follows directly from the warning just given, if thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, teaching measured here by faithful reminder rather than novelty. Nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine pictures a minister feeding on the same truth he serves to others, his own health the source of what he gives away. 1 Timothy 4:7-8

Paul returns to the fables named at 1:4, but refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness, the athlete's word for training turning the letter's exercise imagery toward the godliness thread's own summit word. Bodily exercise profiteth little sets a modest limit on physical discipline without despising it, while godliness is profitable unto all things widens the comparison to cover this present life and the life to come both. The verse does not choose training over the body but ranks the two truthfully, one useful for a season and one useful without end.

1 Timothy 4:9-10

The letter's third faithful saying is named here and its content is the verse just given, godliness profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come, an anchor for the labor Paul describes next. We both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God names the cost of ministry honestly rather than glossing it, reproach the world's answer to a life staked on an unseen hope. 1 Timothy 4:11-12

1 Timothy 4:15-16

Meditate upon these things, give thyself wholly to them closes the chapter with total commitment rather than partial attention, the phrase behind give thyself wholly picturing a man immersed in his task with nothing held back. That thy profiting may appear to all makes visible growth the test of faithful ministry, a minister's progress meant to be seen rather than merely felt.
