1 Thessalonians 4:1-2

The furthermore turns from Timothy's good report to the walk ahead: they received how to walk and to please God, they are doing it, and the ask is only that they abound more and more. Exhortation by the Lord Jesus and commandments given by the Lord Jesus frame even ethics as his authority, not Paul's preference. A church a few months old is treated as already walking, needing increase rather than correction.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5

The will of God is stated flatly, even your sanctification, and its first application is bodily, abstain from fornication, written to converts fresh from a pagan port where the demand was novel. To possess his vessel is read two ways with holders on both sides since the fathers: the vessel as a man's own body, mastered in sanctification and honour, or as his wife, taken in marriage honorably; the Greek verb ktasthai serves either. Either way the contrast is verse 5, not in the lust of concupiscence like the Gentiles which know not God.

1 Thessalonians 4:6-8

Defrauding a brother in any matter here means trespassing on him in this matter, another man's marriage and purity, and the sanction is not social but divine, the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you. The call runs not unto uncleanness, but unto holiness, so the standard flows from the calling itself. Verse 8 removes the last refuge: he that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit, the indwelling Giver making the body his own concern.

1 Thessalonians 4:9-10

On brotherly love Paul declines to teach: ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another, theodidaktoi, a coined word, and the teaching had hands and feet, practiced toward all the brethren in all Macedonia. Jeremiah 31:34's promise that they shall all know me stands behind the coinage, the new covenant's inward teaching observed in a young church. The only exhortation left is the letter's refrain, increase more and more.

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

Study to be quiet is philotimeisthai, be ambitious, so the command runs make it your ambition to live unnoticed, do your own business, work with your own hands. Thessalonian excitement about the Lord's coming was already loosening some hands from their tools, a problem the second letter must address head on. The aim is public credit and private sufficiency, walk honestly toward them that are without, and lack nothing.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

The occasion is grief: believers had died in the few months since the mission, and the church feared the dead would miss the Lord's coming. Sleep is Scripture's word for the believer's death from Daniel 12:2 to the Lord's own them at John 11:11, a figure for the body that waits, and the forbidden sorrow is only the hopeless kind, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. The ground is the creed itself: if Jesus died and rose again, them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

1 Thessalonians 4:15

By the word of the Lord is read two ways with holders, a saying of Jesus preserved outside the written gospels, or a direct revelation given to Paul; either way the teaching that follows carries the Lord's own authority. Prevent is the old English for precede: the living that remain to the coming shall not go before the sleeping. The dead in Christ lose nothing by dying, which is the pastoral point the whole passage exists to make.

1 Thessalonians 4:16

The Lord himself shall descend, no deputy, and three sounds attend him: a shout, keleusma, the commander's word of command, the voice of the archangel, and the trump of God, the shofar thread that runs from Sinai's trumpet through the feast of trumpets to the last trump of 1 Corinthians 15:52. The first result touches the graves: the dead in Christ shall rise first. The verse gives resurrection, not resuscitation, the same order Paul argues at length to Corinth.

1 Thessalonians 4:17

caught up together with them: Caught up is harpazo, seized suddenly by force, the word used of Philip snatched away at Acts 8:39; the Latin Bible rendered it rapiemur, and from that verb the church's word rapture comes. To meet the Lord is apantesis, the term for a city's delegation streaming out to escort an arriving dignitary the rest of the way in, real philology whose bearing on what follows the meeting is argued both ways with holders. What the verse itself settles is the end of the story: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 4:18

The passage's own application is comfort, spoken church member to church member, and any use of the catching up that produces panic or speculation instead has left the text's purpose. Where this event falls relative to the tribulation is the church's long Tier A question: pre-tribulational, mid-tribulational, and post-tribulational readings each argue from Scripture and each has its teachers, and this site's tradition holds the pre-tribulational hope while presenting the others fairly. What no reading touches is the comfort itself: the dead in Christ rise, the living are caught up, and all are with the Lord forever.
