1 Peter 4:1-2

Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind takes up military language, the readers issued the same weapon Christ himself carried into suffering, a settled disposition rather than steel. He that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin is read as the general principle that suffering for righteousness breaks sin's hold, the sufferer already proven willing to lose everything rather than compromise. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God states the aim plainly, a life redirected rather than merely endured.

1 Peter 4:3-4

The time past of our life may suffice acknowledges plainly that at least some readers had lived exactly the pagan life now renounced, lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries naming the ordinary vices of Gentile social and religious life together. Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot explains the social cost of conversion: withdrawal from shared vice reads to former companions as an insult, and they answer it by speaking evil. The verse names the pressure the whole letter is written to steady its readers against, hostility provoked simply by absence from what used to be shared.

1 Peter 4:5-6

Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead answers the former companions' mockery with a court neither side can escape, the same judge who will one day settle every account. For this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead is read alongside 3:19's spirits in prison and, on the main reading held here, names believers who heard the gospel in life and have since died, judged according to men in the flesh, condemned by human standards or by death itself, yet live according to God in the spirit, vindicated beyond what their persecutors could see. No reading of the verse teaches a second chance offered to the dead who never heard, and the church has held that line while naming the verse's readings with their holders rather than settling every detail.

1 Peter 4:7

But the end of all things is at hand states the New Testament's own sense of living in the last days inaugurated by Christ's first coming, an urgency meant to sharpen focus rather than fix a date. Be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer pairs clear-headed self-command with an active prayer life, the same sobriety commanded at 1:13 and 5:8. The nearness of the end is offered here as a spur to devotion, not as material for calculation.

1 Peter 4:8

Above all things have fervent charity among yourselves ranks love first among the community virtues the chapter is about to name. For charity shall cover the multitude of sins draws on Proverbs 10:12, love covers all sins, the same proverb James 5:20 cites for the same purpose, love that overlooks another's fault and refuses to broadcast it rather than love that purchases forgiveness from God. The covering is love's own patient work between believers, never a payment love makes to God on sin's behalf.

1 Peter 4:9

Use hospitality one to another without grudging names a concrete virtue the early church depended on, traveling believers and persecuted households needing a door opened without resentment behind the welcome. Grudging, goggusmos, is the same word for Israel's murmuring in the wilderness, a complaint kept alive under a smiling face. The single short command puts a practical edge on the fervent charity just commanded, love proven in an open door rather than only in feeling.

1 Peter 4:10-11

as good stewards of the manifold grace of God: As every man hath received the gift assumes every believer carries some gift, charisma, from the manifold grace of God, and the charge is stewardship, minister the same one to another, gifts given for the community's use rather than private possession. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God covers teaching and prophetic gifts, and if any man minister names practical service, both traced to the same source, the ability which God giveth. The gifts named here are received as continuing rather than ceased, ministered today by the same grace and toward the same end, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 4:12-13

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial answers a real temptation, believers surprised or scandalized by suffering as though persecution were some foreign intrusion into a promised easy life. As though some strange thing happened unto you corrects the expectation directly: suffering for Christ is the letter's own norm, not an anomaly requiring an explanation. But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings ties present suffering to future glory yet again, that when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy, the letter's suffering-and-glory thread stated once more at its clearest.

1 Peter 4:14

If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye repeats the Lord's own beatitude for persecution from Matthew 5:11, blessing pronounced precisely where the world pronounces shame. The spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you echoes Isaiah 11:2's spirit resting on the Messiah, now resting on those who suffer for his name, a striking claim that the Spirit is most manifestly present exactly where the reproach is sharpest. On their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified sets the same event under two verdicts at once, blasphemy from the world's side and glory from God's.

1 Peter 4:15-16

But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters draws the line the whole letter has assumed, suffering has value only when it is undeserved, and the church is warned as sharply against real wrongdoing as it is comforted against unjust reproach. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian names the name in its third and last New Testament use, after Antioch's own coinage of the term at Acts 11:26 and Agrippa's mocking use at Acts 26:28, now claimed here without shame as an identity worth suffering for. Let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God on this behalf turns the very name that invited Nero's persecution into a title to be worn openly.

1 Peter 4:17-18

For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God reads the persecution itself as a form of purifying judgment falling first on God's own household, discipline rather than condemnation, the same logic 1 Corinthians 11:32 applies to the Lord's chastening of believers. And if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God argues from the lesser case to the greater, if God's own family is refined this severely, the fate awaiting those who reject the gospel altogether is graver still. 1 Peter 4:19

Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator closes the chapter's argument with a single verb, paratithemi, the word for a deposit left in trust with someone reliable to keep it. The ground named is not merely Redeemer but Creator, faithful Creator, the one who made the sufferer in the first place and can be trusted to hold what he made through any fire. In well doing keeps the letter's whole ethic attached to the very last word: suffering entrusted to God is never suffering excused from continuing to do right.
